2015 CHRISTMAS PARTY |
Horning Bridge Club celebrated its annual Christmas Party on Monday 14th December 2015 with a wonderful turn-out of members resulting in 16 tables in play. Chief tournament director Robert Harber greeted arriving members with a festive drink, which they enjoyed whilst awaiting start of play. A mid-session interval was taken where all sampled a fantastic selection of savouries and sweets that members had provided for the occasion.
A fun bridge pivot movement was played and at the end of play scores were totted up resulting in individual North, South, East and West winners and runners up. Prizes were presented by Chairman Ron Hunt.

15th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS |
Horning Bridge Club celebrated its 15th Anniversary on Monday 28th September 2015 at the Wroxham Yacht Club, where we held a duplicate bridge session in the afternoon, including a break for tea, followed by dinner in the evening.
Prizes were awarded to the North-South winners, Jill Abbott & Hazel Carney, and to the East-West winners, Eve Briggs & Jean Mayhew.
Master of Ceremonies Robert Harber did a great job in directing the bridge session and coordinating the day and received a gift from Chairman Ron Hunt in appreciation.
Appreciative gifts were also received by Diane Harber and David Smith for their work done behind the scenes in organising the event.
The event was attended by the Club's founder and Life President, Suzanne Gill, together with some of its founder members and over 50 of the current membership.
The Club thanks all committee members and friends who helped make the day a great event!

At this years' A.G.M. on the 14th September 2015 retiring commitee members were thanked for all their efforts in continuing to make Horning Bridge Club a friendly and pleasant club for all bridge players.
Retiring Chairperson Cathy Smith received a "thank-you" gift of a Salvia plant of the deep purple variety "Amistrad", whilst retiring Committee members Diane Harber, Pat Whittle and Maureen Gittins each received a mixed winter collection of plants. Unfortunately, Maureen was not present to receive her gift due to temporary incapacitation but it will be delived to her shortly.
The newly elected Committee now comprises: Ron Hunt (Chairman), David Smith (Vice Chairman), Peter Bowman (Treasurer), Glenny McAndie (Secretary), Pauline Amos (Catering), Jenny Hemmings (Partner Finder) and general Committee members Sylvia Briggs, Jenny Pearce and Peter Clarke.
The Club welcomes the new Chairman and all newly elected Committee members.

HBC AWAY DAY HOLIDAY INN MONDAY 12th JANUARY 2015 |
We returned again to the Holiday Inn, Norwich for our annual away-day and carvery luncheon where an excellent day out was enjoyed by all.
On arrival at 10:00 am members enjoyed tea or coffee whilst settling in to the bridge tables awaiting start of play. Chairperson Cathy Smith outlined the approximate timetable for the day and bridge commenced at 10:30 am. A pivot movement was chosen where three boards are played at each table with North stationery, partnering South, West and East consecutively. The East-West pair and the boards then move in a normal Mitchell duplicate movement.
Bridge was adjourned at 12:30 pm for lunch and re-commenced at 13:45 pm until time for tea and coffee refreshments at approximately 15:30 pm. A raffle was then held in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, the charity this year being chosen by Jane Brown. A magnificient £300.00 was raised for this well-deserving charity and Chairperson Cathy Smith presented Jane with the cheque.
Finally, the bridge prize winners were announced and Cathy Smith presented the prizes:
NORTH WINNER: Reg Ovenden (4,820) SOUTH WINNER: Ron Boote (1,420)
EAST WINNER: Benita Murray (2,960) WEST WINNER: Sylvia Briggs (3,370)
Consolation prizes were also awarded to the players finishing CLOSEST TO ZERO as follows:
NORTH: Robert Harber (+140) SOUTH: Tony Slack (-30)
EAST: Maureen Gittins (+200) WEST: Cathy Jackson (+330)

A MEETING WITH OMAR SHARIFF |
Following the recently announced death of Omar Shariff, members may be interested to see a photo of the Hollywood superstar and renowned world-class bridge player with our founder and life president, Suzanne Gill, in Sheffield about 25 years ago. Suzanne also played bridge against the great man at a Summer Brighton Congress.
