2024-2025 season news
Between Seasons - Eastborne Summer meeting Congratulations

Its summer and between seasons - dont forget to enter next seaons HIWCBA events above.
Meanwhile, most of us continue to play bridge regularly and last weekend (7th to 11th August) saw many HIWCBA players enter the Eastbourne Summer congress and do well, often with friends from other counties (full results here).
In fact it looks like alll HIWCBA players who entered finished in the top half of the main events and HIWCBA members even won the main events: So special congratulations to Steve Lee for winning both the Open Pairs and the Swiss Pairs - Harold Poster Trophy and to Peter Crouch on winning the Swiss Teams - Brighton Bowl

Presidents Cup Congratulations

Congratulations to the HIWCBA team (Fred Hotchen & David Huggett, Gabriel Hearst & James Bond, James Clark & Steve Preston, Guy Lawrenson & Michael Yeo, Mike Kinsey & Lilias Lamont (Day 1 only), Stuart Strachan & Eleanor Rice (Day 1 only), Stuart Burnett & Tony Truluck(Day 2 only)) on winning the Presidents Cup.
The President's Cup is an inter-county multiple teams of 8 competition run over 2 days and is organised by Merseyside & Cheshire. The 2025 event took place over the weekend of 12th/13th july with 7 teams competing. Historically the competition has mostly involved northern counties but this year entrants have spanned the full breath of Great Britain from Scotland to the Isle of Wight. Detailed scores for each day are shown in the results section of the Merseyside and Cheshire website here. The cumulative scores show Hampshire & IOW as the clear winners. Hampshire & IOW  84 VPs, Yorkshire 77 VPs, Scotland 75 VPs, London  69 VPs , Manchester  46VPs, Merseyside & Cheshire  45 VPs, North East  24 VPs

Philip Graham and Derek Gibbins Victor Ludorum Congratulations
Philip Graham and Derek Gibbins Victor Ludorum Congratulations

Congratulations to Mike Kinsey, Lillias Lamont, Owen Leigh and James Clark (Team Kinsey - pictured above), winners of the final event of the 2024-2025 HIWCBA season – the Philip Graham Teams at Lymington bridge club; An event with an early start to maximise entries from the Isle Of Wight.

11 teams was just enough for a swiss style event providing the 6th round was a revenge round. After 5 rounds, Team Foster (Graham Foster & Yvonne Moores, Lesley Lewis & Fran Alexander) had a slender lead over team Kinsey, whom they had beaten in an early round. Defending champions, Team Preston (Steve Preston & Fred Hotchen, Richard & Christine Ray) were third. In the 6th round Team Kinsey got their revenge over Team Foster (a 15-5 win) to win the trophy; Team Preston failed to win big so stayed 3rd with Team Foster 2nd . An IOW Team - Team Naughton (Eric & Christine Naughton, Ian Ralph & Anne Richardson) did win round 6 big and rose to 4th place. Well done to all – especially to Mike Kinsey who both directed and played – a difficult task indeed.  Full results here.

Also a big thank you to Lymington Club for laying on an excellent lunch and tea.

The Philip Graham was also the final event in the 2024-2025 Victor Ludorum competition. After 5 of the 6 events Tony Truluck & Stuart Burnett had a slender lead but, since they did not enter the Philip graham, they slipped to equal fourth in the final standings (on 469 points). James Clark rose to third (on 509) with the defending champion Steve Preston  2nd (on 545)  and finally Congratulations to Mike Kinsey (pictured top above) - the new Derek Gibbins trophy holder (on 652) Full final Derek Gibbins Victor Ludorum standings here.
