Mid way through 2026 already. The Club continues on its merry path.
Membership is growing but not as rapidly as we would like. Because of the lessons being run by both Rob and Amanda we expect to add some of the attendees into the Club as new members. We owe a vote of thanks to Rob and Amanda for running these lessons and on-going lessons will become a regular feature of the Club.
The money we spent recently upgrading the computerised scoring system is starting to pay dividends despite occasional hitches. The new Bridge Pads are really efficient and we will be looking at getting more in the near future. We have rejoined Scorebridge, so have recourse to them for upgrades and advice. We have a functioning Website. It is, however, underutilized, and I encourage all of you to use the site constantly. Just link to Harare Bridge Club. The site is administered by Rob, so call him if you have any queries.
We owe a debt of gratitude to Leif for managing the upgrade and installation of the system and the Website.
We hosted the Schools’ tournament a few months ago (thanks again to Leif). It was extremely successful with over 100 schoolchildren playing. Then we held the Mashonaland Pairs tournament which was also enjoyed by all participants. Before the end of the year we will run the Zimbabwe Pairs and finally the Christmas lunch Bridge Day in December.
We have recovered from the tragic death of Valentine, in whose honour we have named the social room at the Club. Panashe has joined us and he and Marvellous are working well together and help create a happy atmosphere for all of us.
We also lost a couple of long standing and respected members this year which was sad. Anja Cameron, past Chairman many times, Fiona Atkinson, our Club Secretary, and Ossie Landman who had been a member since the 1960’s. We miss them all.
We have refurbished the Servants Quarters at the Club and have carried out some repairs to the wall. We will shortly build a gazebo like structure for the staff next to their accommodation so that they have somewhere to sit other than in their rooms, and a storage room to replace the current dilapidated structure.
The finances of the Club are in good order. The Committee works extremely well and I take this opportunity to thank them all for their efforts.
Play more Bridge and, most of all, enjoy doing so.
