Master Points Scheme from 2024

Basis for Calculation of Master Points.

For Pairs.

1 Master point = 10 Local points.

There are Four types of Tournaments. [To determine Factor, F]

  1. Any Restricted club level (Junior tournaments or women’s only tournaments.) [F=0.5]
  2. Club Open tournaments. [F=1]
  3. Club Open Championships [F=1.5] [Restricted to 4 per year]
  4. District Championships [F=1.75]
  5. BFSL any OPEN tournament [F=2]
  6. BFSL OPEN championship events. [ only two per year viz. Pairs with elimination & Teams], [F=3]

Master Points earned is proportional to the number of Pairs (P) taking Part.

Master Points earned is proportional to the number of Boards (B) played. [average no: of boards = 16]

Master Points earned is proportional to the number category of the tournament, Factor F.

Master Points earned is inversely proportional to the Rank attained. (R).

Therefore,

Local Master Points = [P x (B/18) x F] /R

Ex: For 20 pairs tournament, playing 24 board, in a club level (F=1.5) tournament and coming first:

Local Points = [20 x 24/18 x 1.5] /1 = 40, Master points = 4.0

Second pair gets 20 ,(1/2 of 40) equivalent to 2.0 Master points.

And so on for 1/3 the field.

Basis for Calculation of Master Points.

For Teams.

No. of Teams = T

No. matches won = M

Boards per Match = B [Average= 8]

Factor = as above

Therefore, Local Points = [T x M x (B/8) x F]

Ex. In a six Teams round robin teams event playing 10 board matches:

Local Points = [6 x 5 x (12/8) x 2]   = 90 equivalent to 9 Master Points, every member gets 9 points prorated to the number of boards played.

Bridge Federation of Sri Lanka

Master point Scheme.

Eligibility:

Any club/association/group affiliated with the Bridge Federation of Sri Lanka (BFSL)

Provided the membership dues are paid & there are no outstanding arrears as at date.

BFSL will maintain a written (i.e. hard copy) documentation of the individual Master Points tallied according to the no. of tournament a player has participated.

Tournaments Categories:

Club:

*Open

*Open Championship

*Restricted

BFSL Open

BFSL CHAMPIONSHIP

Match Points awarded according to an ascending scale. Lowest being ‘club restricted’ category.

A Club may nominate 4 events per year as a major Championship, to be at least 27 board duration.

The sponsoring organization to submit the result to the BFSL relevant authority.

Competitors entitled to an Award

In a basic game the proportion of competitors entitled to an award is approximately one third (1/3) the field.

NO master points will be awarded unless at least 12 boards are played by each participant.

Boards scheduled to be ‘sat out ‘are not considered for the 12 boards played.

No points awarded for a pairs event unless all the competitors are scheduled to play at least 70% of the boards used in the movement. Thus when intention to play 21 boards, no more than 30 should be in circulation.

As a general principle a player must play at least one third of the boards involved in the stage of event for which an award is being made. To receive due award.  Ex: a team of 6 players participating ONLY the players who completed one third of the total no. of boards are entitled to the award.

Fractional/Decimal Awards:

The decimals will be expressed up to Two (2) decimal points.

Tied Positions:

Tied positions are given equal master points. (i.e. NEVER broken) The average of 1st & 2nd will be taken into consideration & divided equally.

The calculations to be done as

  1. Master point equivalent to 10 local points.

As such

Club restricted                           .05      MP

Club open                                    1        MP

Club open Championship         1.5     MP

District Level Tournaments      1.75   MP

BFSL open                                    2        MP

NOTE: BFSL Open Championships will be held ONLY twice a year consisting of ONE (1) open pairs tournament of no less than 36 boards & ONE (1) Teams Event.

NOTE:

Until which time, the formula for the old Master Points could be discerned, thus making it possible to amalgamate both.
