Minutes of the EGM held on 12th May 2026

Imposition of room hire charges by ESSC
David Milne presented the information gained from the ESSC committee meeting he had attended. ESSC are imposing a charge, on both the Chess Club and our Bridge Club for the hire of the room, of £20 per hour as from 1st July 2026. Their proposal is that the annual membership fee of £25, which has in the past been a requirement of ESSC, would therefore not need to be paid. This would mean that the Bridge Club members would no longer be members of the ESSC.
However, as a result of David’s negotiations, the ESSC committee have agreed to reduce the room hire for six months, commencing 1st July 2026, to £10 per hour, meaning a total charge for the evening of £30. This will mean a charge of £2 will be made to all players who are ESSC members. Non-members should pay £4.
The proposal to stay as members and pay a reduced charge of £15 per hour from January 2027 is under consideration by the ESSC committee.
Decision on the future operation of the Bridge Club
The decision of all of those present (and four of the absentees) was to accept the room charges, although one member expressed his objection. Another member suggested that the kitchen should be made available to us but apparently the club insurance does not permit this. A method of paying the weekly table money via the bank will be made clear in due course.
