The Promise of Spring
Dear Members,
As ever, your Committee have been beavering away in the background of our Bridge Club and here is my report on past and present news.
The Christmas Tree Festival. Our much admired submission was a very worthwhile ‘labour of love’ by Bobbi and myself, which brought forth fruit in the new members that have joined us. We created The Queen of Hearts, and she did us proud as an unbelievable number of people attended both coach trips and locals, raising £14,000. With grateful thanks to those of our members who did a stint at stewarding for an hour to hand out cards with our contact details.
Then came our Christmas Party held on Monday 15th December. Another resounding success, mostly due to yourselves for attending, and the tireless work of Peggy, for the brilliant Raffle Prizes donated by local businesses - Sara, for the excellent array of food, (Hazel Pittock for those gorgeous meringues) and Sara and Peggy’s hubbies for organising the bar, keeping our glasses topped up, and washing up afterwards. Not forgetting Ann and Giles for a great selection of Bridge prizes. The Raffle raised £281, the proceeds were donated to our chosen charity, Charlotte Straker and gratefully received.
Your Committee is not a ‘closed shop’. If anyone feels that they would like to be involved, please see me. We can always find you a role!
So,here we are, into the New Year, and we look forward to the introduction of our new scoring devices for Monday evenings. This should happen in the very near future, then Philip will get us all trained up when they arrive, proving that you can teach old dogs new tricks!
As mentioned in my November letter, our Spring outing date is set for
Tuesday 21st April, 12 noon
At The George, Chollerford. £28 for two courses plus coffee/tea
Please sign up on the list on the Notice Board
Sara and her husband Robert have selflessly tested the food again,😉 as there have been changes in management and chef, since our last visit, but all is good. They looked after us so well last year and it is such a pretty venue. Dear Monday Members - many of you still have work commitments but we miss you and would love you to come if you possibly can.
Another date for your diary:
AGM Monday 13th April at 6.30pm (usual Bridge session after at 7pm)
My thanks to Deryn, who took the trouble to write a strong letter to the Parish Council regarding the flashing strip lights, which backed up our many complaints. It did the trick it seems, as we are now back to normal service.
And finally………
Our dear Founder, Betty Cowling, has been restored to us once again, after suffering several broken ribs and a stay in hospital and convalescence. Betty is in her mid-nineties. She is a real trooper and plays a mean hand of Bridge!
Enjoy the Snowdrops and soon to appear Daffodils, and, who knows, some sunshine. 🌞
Your President,
Mandy Norton
