Announcing and Alerting 2022 |
New Announcing and Alerting regulations are now in force for EBU competitions. The EBU document can be found by clicking on "EBU Information" on the left-hand menu. When the page opens you will find extra options in the menu. Choose "2022 Alerting and Announcing" to see the summary.
Club Tournaments are not bound by these regulations but we adhere to them so that players ae used to what happens in EBU competitions.
The main changes in 2022 are (the changes made in 2013 are underneath)
- minor suit transfers over 1NT (that is 2S showing clubs and 2NT showing Diamonds) are now announced by saying "clubs" or "diamonds"
- the point range of an opening 2NT is NO LONGER announced (this reverts the situation back to before 2013)
- a 1NT response to a suit opening which may contain more than 10 points needs its point range to be announced
- A 2 level new suit response to a 1 level suit opening which is game forcing needs to be announced as "game forcing"
- Transfer responses to short 1 club (possibly less then 3 cards in length) are announced with the name of the suit they show
The main changes in 2013 were:
- One level minor suit openings which could be fewer than 3 cards are now announced (strong artificial is still alerted)
- 2NT openings (Rescinded in 2022) and the Stayman (4-card) and red-suit transfer responses are now announced - as with 1NT
- Only transfer completions that deny 4 card support are alerted
- An artificial SUIT bid on the first round (starting with the opening bid) is alerted even if it is above 3NT.
I suggest you highlight a copy of the document with your own arrangements.

Club Handbook and Director's Notes |
The club first published a handbook in 1995. It was written by our late Chairman Bill Cobbe. The latest version "March 2019" can be viewed and printed here. As well as giving some general information it details some of the more important ethical and procedural aspects of the game.

The Laws 2017 |

The Decadual revision of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge come into force on 1st August. There has been quite a lot of rewording but only a few changes that will affect anything. The next section links to a useful summary of the changes which I found on the Welsh Bridge Union Website

Summary of major changes provided by the Welsh Bridge Union |

Things which players/directors should note ( *I have added one that I missed on 8/4/18):
- An unaccepted insuffient bid can now be replaced without penalty by a 'comparable call'. Roughly speaking this includes any call with the same meaning. So if you bid 2C over your partner's 2NT you can replace it with 3C without penalty so long as both were Stayman. This has increased significantly the number of calls that can be made without penalty
- If a claim is contested then, with the agreement of all 4 players, play may be continued - but there can be no further referral to the Director
- A partner can request the correction of a mis-pointed card until a membership of the partnership has played to the next trick. Previously the time limit was when a lead had been made to the next trick.
- At the end of play you can ask to see another players cards and can handle them with the permission of an opponent. This is often useful when there is a claim and a revoke is suspected. Less usefully it can precede deragotory comments about your partner's bidding/play
- There are several changes to the penalties when there is a call out of turn - I could never remember what the various laws were and I always referred to the Law Book. Please do the same.
- *You are now not allowed to condone or accept a lead out of turn on trick 13. It must be corrected!!! (
- Lastly the rules concerning information given by a penalty card have been revised. I read the old ones many times without much gain in understanding possibly I will do better this time; give me a year or two
