Thursday Bridge Club (Cambridge) – Is 50 years Old.
This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Thursday Bridge Club, located in the heart of Cambridge. 56 current and former members commemorated this significant milestone with a celebratory dinner at The Green Man in Trumpington, followed by a session of duplicate bridge.
Upon arrival, guests were welcomed with refreshments and an address from the Joint Chair. Speeches were delivered by Gladys Gittins, one of the club’s founding members, and David Man, who has served multiple terms as chairman. Both individuals have received the Dimmie Fleming award from the English Bridge Union in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the game.
The club originated in 1975 when members of the former Blinco Club sought to establish another evening for bridge, leading to the formation of The Thursday Club. The initial meetings took place at the Conservative Party Headquarters on Hartington Grove. In 1983, the club relocated to the Constitutional Club on Cherry Hinton Road, before moving in 1988 to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, where several large rooms accommodated play until 1995. Subsequently, the club was based at Trinity College until the onset of lockdown. During the lockdown period, online games were introduced to sustain engagement. Following the lifting of restrictions, the club established its new venue in Trumpington, where sessions are held on Thursday evenings. Owing to the success of the online format, a virtual game continues to take place every Friday evening.
The current committee is dedicated to promoting the club's ongoing development, organising three annual social events—one during the summer and one prior to Christmas—and arranging a bridge weekend away for members.
