WELCOME TO BURY ST EDMUNDS BRIDGE CLUB

Joan: partner broker

Formed in 1981 we are a friendly duplicate Bridge Club welcoming new and visiting players and meet every Thursday evening for F2F play.  Play starts at 7pm.

We have around 50 members and use a well-lit room.  We have tea, coffee, and drinks and biscuits available all evening.

We also currently play on Line on the BBO programme at 7pm on Wednesdays.

Our partner broker is Joan Watson and she can be contacted on j.watson120@btinternet.com

We join nationwide Simultaneous Pairs events a few times a year.

Our address is Southgate Community Centre, Caie Walk, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 2PJ.  Tel no 01284 703705

There is another Bridge club in Bury - Abbeygate Club who play duplicate on Mondays (on line on the RealBridge programme) and Tuesdays F2F at Nowton Court.  Many of our members belong to both clubs.

BRIDGE SEASON GETS UNDERWAY
BRIDGE SEASON GETS UNDERWAY

Autumn may be the season of mellow fruitfullness but traditionally it also provides the runway from which a number of bridge competitions take off.

'Events' have interrupted the county calendar in recent times but - fingers crossed - that should not be the case this autumn.

Over the coming weeks a host of competitions are being run to suit all tastes. In no particular order:

♠ CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS: In October clubs hold a heat and players who score 50% or more qualify for the final.

♥ CLUB TEAMS of 8: F2F on Saturday 19 November (2pm) at Colchester and worth entering just for the wonderful tea prepared by the local sea scouts. Entry details will appear here soon.

♦ SUFFOLK CONGRESS: a one day F2F Swiss Pairs at Elmswell on Sunday 2 October (11am) replaces the traditional visit to Felixstowe. Click CONGRESS to enter.

♣ CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS: An online knock out spread over the winter months. Click on TEAMS to enter. (Entries close 1 November)

♥ 9-HIGH event at Nayland on Sunday 4 December,(11am) open to any player with an NGS grade of 2 to 9. Entry details will appear here soon

♦ And there is still time to enter the golf-bridge day at Aldeburgh's outstanding course on Monday 17 October. Click on GOLF to enter.

A comprehensive list of events organised by the County is available to view on the County website, click on the link to the left of this notice.
A copy is on the notice board at Southgate Community Centre.

COMMITTEE MEETING REPORT

An Update 24 August 2022

At our recent Committee Meeting we decided that players will still not be allowed to sign up to play with a robot in our Wednesday Online BBO sessions.  Obviously if someone loses connection during the evening a robot will be substituted for them and a pair of robots will be used where we have a half table. We offer an (underused) Partner Broker service so if you are in need of a partner please contact Joan.  j.watson120@btinternet.com

KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH THE EBU

An article on the Suffolk website gives insight about information you can access on EBU (English Bridge Union) website.  From news to competitions and checking up on your masterpoints its your way to keep in touch with all that's going on.  All you need to access your own details is your EBU number and, oh yes, decide on a password!

REALBRIDGE

REALBRIDGE.

A link will be shown on our website, simply click on that and you will be able to join

Once on the home page you will need to fill in your name and EBU membership number in the ID box and then join a table, opposite your partner, if they are already there. If they are not there just click on an empty space. It’s as easy as that!

Three more points to take note of:-

  1. Use Chrome rather than Edge as your browser – RealBridge works much better on Chrome
  2. If you lose connection – Refresh or log back in again
  3. If necessary you can control the volume when playing by clicking on the mic symbol to the right of a person’s name.

If you need a partner please contact Joan 01284 787286 and she will send an email round to members.

HOW TO PLAY BRIDGE ONLINE

Never played bridge on-line - and intimidated by what's involved? DON'T BE!

An A-B-C guide to playing bridge at BridgeBaseOnline (BBO) which covers the most basic points - how to get started, how to join a game - has been created for Suffolk Bridge by Peter Bushby, and even includes some very fancy film clips.

The big advantage of playing on BBO is that you can partner a real person (for example, your regular partner) - rather than a robot - and it only costs $3.00 per game, of which 70% is returned to the relevant club later.

So with no prospect of any club bridge for at least three months and probably longer don't feel left out...just click on HOW TO PLAY BRIDGE ON LINE.

In addition to the basics, the comprehensive guide also shows how you can enter Suffolk's regular Sunday evening duplicate, how to play a match between two teams of four, and much more besides.

The EBU has also produced a guide on how to play on BBO. Click on EBU to see.
