WELCOME TO BURY ST EDMUNDS BRIDGE CLUB

Joan: partner broker

Formed in 1981 we are a friendly duplicate Bridge Club welcoming new and visiting players and meet every Thursday evening for F2F play.  Play starts at 7pm.

We have around 50 members and use a well-lit room.  We have tea, coffee, and drinks and biscuits available all evening.

Currently we also play on Line on the RealBridge programme at 7pm on Wednesdays.

Our partner broker is Joan Watson and she can be contacted on j.watson120@btinternet.com

We join nationwide Simultaneous Pairs events a few times a year.

Our address is Southgate Community Centre, Caie Walk, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 2PJ.  Tel no 01284 703705

There is another Bridge club in Bury - Abbeygate Club who play duplicate on Mondays (on line on the RealBridge programme) and Tuesdays F2F at Nowton Court.  Many of our members belong to both clubs

Supervised play for improvers

In January 2023 our club introduced a supervised play session that runs alongside the normal club duplicate on Thursday nights.

Supervised play is open to all players who have advanced from ‘beginners’ to ‘improvers.’ The session will be run by an experienced player or qualified EBU teacher.

Hands will be pre dealt with help and guidance on bidding and hand – play, so this will suit a player with some experience or has completed a beginner class.

Starting at 7pm the class will usually finish 9 – 9-30 pm

Bah Humbug - 29th December

With Christmas and New Year often playing havoc with club calendars, the Bah Humbug Pairs aims to fill a festive gap in our bridge lives.

In keeping with the season of goodwill, this event would not claim to be the most serious bridge occasion of the year...which is probably one reason why it has proved popular.

Bah Humbug takes place this year on Friday 29 December at Blackbourne community centre, Blackbourne Road, Elmswell (IP30 9UH) starting at 11am. Depending on numbers, about 26 boards will be played.

To enter, please the visit the SCBA website and click on BAH HUMBUG  Please bring your own lunch.

There is a second chance to qualify for this on line on RealBridge on Wednesday 3rd January 2024

1. Heats to be held in clubs during October/November - the heats will be F2F. There will be an online open heat, for anyone who has missed their club heat, in January 2024.  The final will be F2F

2. All players who achieve 50% or more in a heat will be eligible to take part in the final at Elmswell on Sunday 21st April  2024.

3. Players may only attempt qualification once - please ask players whether they wish to attempt qualification before play starts.

4. Any out of county players who achieve more than 50% in a heat will not be eligible to play in the final, since the top three pairs in the final will be invited to represent Suffolk in the Corwen Trophy.

New monthly Duplicate Handicap

On 29 June we held the first of  a new ‘handicap duplicate’ session.  It was a big success and attracted 9 tables.  The first winners were Denis Carter & Peter Warren.   These sessions will continue on the last Thursday of each month for the foreseeable future

The handicap system will be based on the NGS of each player giving each pair a + or – depending upon their ranking. Players on a low NGS will have the advantage over more highly rated players.  A handicap may benefit the less experienced player by giving him or her a better chance, but it also benefits the better player by producing more of a challenge.

All club members and newcomers welcome, the usual table money of £2.50 per person applies.  Bury Bridge Club play at 7pm at Southgate Community Centre. Please arrive from 6.30pm.

REALBRIDGE

REALBRIDGE.

A link will be shown on our website, simply click on that and you will be able to join

Once on the home page you will need to fill in your name and EBU membership number in the ID box and then join a table, opposite your partner, if they are already there. If they are not there just click on an empty space. It’s as easy as that!

Three more points to take note of:-

  1. Use Chrome rather than Edge as your browser – RealBridge works much better on Chrome
  2. If you lose connection – Refresh or log back in again
  3. If necessary you can control the volume when playing by clicking on the mic symbol to the right of a person’s name.

Some people have found circular blue & white icons appearing in front of their bidding cards if they are using Edge - they appear as    image001.png    and    image002.png

It is caused by a feature of Edge called "Visual Search".  This feature should be disabled for the RealBridge site.  To do that, hover over the icon (or the upper of the two icons), so that you can see the lower icon with three dots in it.  Click on the three dots, and a submenu will appear, like this:    image003.png

Then do "hide for this site" (if you want to disable this feature for all websites you can instead do "hide always")

If you need a partner please contact Joan 01284 787286 and she will send an email round to members.

KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH THE EBU

An article on the Suffolk website gives insight about information you can access on EBU (English Bridge Union) website.  From news to competitions and checking up on your masterpoints its your way to keep in touch with all that's going on.  All you need to access your own details is your EBU number and, oh yes, decide on a password!
