Combine your chances

This is the hand of the week  11/4/22. However, there we looked at the defence and now we look at the declarer play.

We are not saying that the bidding should go as shown at all tables but essentially South should finish playing in 3NT.

Can you see the best line to make 9 tricks  after the lead of the  J which is overtaken by the Queen? (The title might help)

It is a notrump hand and so make C.A.M.P

Count your quick tricks by power. 1 spade, 2 diamonds and 4 clubs. Total 7

Add tricks from other sources, After the lead, you have a trick by position in hearts. You need the spade finesse or the diamond finesse for your 9th.

Manage the hand. It looks as though I have to guess which finesse to take, but can I combine my chances? Yes, as you have 8 diamonds the  Q might come down in 2, so cash the two top diamonds, and if the Queen appears you are home. If it does not cash the clubs and take the spade finesse.

Play the hand. Win the hearts, cash the Ace and King of diamonds and when the queen does not appear playoff your 3 top clubs and take the spade finesse. 9 tricks

Easy game bridge
