An appeal from Pip

Congratulations Pip on the completion of your run. I know it was extremely hard for you, but such a worthy cause,  Hopefully all our encouragement spurred you on.

If you would like to support Pip with donations to Dementia/Alzheimers click on the link below.

Dear all,

A few years ago someone equivalent to my mum was diagnosed with Dementia/Alzheimers and I had to watch someone so bright and intellectual who I loved and admired so much reduced to such an awful state that she eventually refused to eat.  I vowed then that I would do what ever I could to help raise money to combat this dreadful illness.  Indeed one of the reasons I started to play bridge was the knowledge that alongside chess it forms one the best possible forms of mental exercise and therefore defence against these cruel illnesses.  I’ve only taken until now because I’ve had to put in a lot of effort to recover from my knee operation, but I’m ready.  On September 11th I am (gulp) going to be trekking 26 miles (yes that’s miles not kilometres) around Salisbury and Stone Henge.  If you didn’t think I had a screw loose you probably do now!  But please do consider sponsoring me as this is no small feat for me and it will be going towards fighting these debilitating and degrading diseases.

Here’s the link to my Just Giving page and thank you for reading this.   https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/pipandemmawalkthewalk?utm_source=Sharethis&utm_medium=fundraising&utm_content=pipandemmawalkthewalk&utm_campaign=pfp-email&utm_term=b18e7477dc514ef2ba77e4c4cd6d2a1d.

Welcome to Broadstairs Bridge Club
Coronavirus Update

We will be restarting face to face our Monday afternoons and Wednesday evenings from the 4th and 6th October

Dear Member

I do hope this letter/email finds you well and that you have coped reasonably well during the Pandemic. It’s been very hard for all of us in different ways.  We are now hopefully, seeing some light at the end of the tunnel and things are starting to get back to some normality.

It is on this note, I am writing to say that we are making plans to return to our club and some face-to-face bridge.  The decision has not been taken lightly as we do have several concerns and worries about commitment and safety, but we must start somewhere.

The committee has agreed to restart some face-to-face sessions at the club from October.  We will be introducing a phased approach however and therefore we have decided to run Monday afternoons and Wednesday evenings only at the beginning.

All other sessions will be kept online for now, until we can see how these sessions are going. There is the possibility after a few weeks to see if we can run the Monday and Wednesday sessions online as well and try to merge the results, as we do not want to prevent anyone from playing, if they feel they really cannot return to the club face-to-face, but more information about that later.

We will be taking extra Covid precautions upon returning to face-to-face play in common with other clubs who have restarted.

  • Everyone is expected to have had 2 covid vaccinations (unless medically exempt), with the second one at least 2 weeks before playing. You should NOT attend if you have any cold or flu like symptoms or if you have tested positive or are self-isolating.
  • If anyone tests positive after playing in a session, they should inform the club immediately and all the players in that session will be asked to take PCR tests, in line with current track and trace requirements.
  • Hand sanitizers must be used on entering the hall and will be freely available around the room
  • Social distancing as much as possible and therefore tables will need to be spaced out more than previously
  • Facemasks should be worn (unless exempt) during set up and taking the tables down, however when seated, it will become a personal choice.
  • You will keep a bidding box for the session, which you will carry around with you on movements.
  • Initially, no tea/coffee or biscuits will be served, however, we will stop for a short break for people to use toilet facilities and therefore would suggest you bring your own refreshments for the time being.
  • Ventilation:  We will be required to have windows or doors open during all sessions, therefore please be prepared to bring jumpers or coats.
  • Normally, there will be no need to pre-book, although space may be limited as we are unsure at present how many tables we can accommodate, so initially, we are going to ask you to put your name down to play in advance by either emailing caroljbrocklehurst@gmail.com or telephoning Carol on 01843 603475 to reserve your space
  • We need to clean down all touch points we have used before we leave, in addition the new hall cleaner will be cleaning every day as normal, so we will need a rota to assist with the cleaning of the touch points at the end of the session
  • A Broadstairs Bridge Club risk assessment will be submitted to the church halls and will be available on request.

So, starting on Monday the 4th October we will run our first session.  To encourage members to come along if they feel safe, I have decided to offer a host for the first couple of Mondays, so therefore you can come along without a partner and I will pair you up, or you might even unfortunately get me!

The Tai Chi club is not returning on a Monday anymore and therefore, we have at last managed to acquire a slightly longer session time, by starting play at 2pm rather than 2.30pm and finishing by 4.45pm   Our Wednesday evening session on the 6th October will start at 6:50pm till 10pm approximately, but unfortunately at the moment, there will not be a host available, but you can always use our partnering service to see if someone else is looking for a partner.  This can be done via Rosemary English on 07948 185033 or 01843 448062 or email her on g-r.english@tiscali.co.uk

The success of the club returning to normal is down entirely to its members.  We need you to support the club if you feel safe to come back.

We are aware that Wednesday evenings are generally quite low numbers, but we are hoping that until we re-instate the Tuesday evenings for students, that they will all return on the Wednesday evening instead.

We have experienced problems with our bank recently and we therefore need to open a new account. Due to the cost of the halls, it has been decided that there will no longer be any refunds on the BBO Bridge, which is in line with Thanet Bridge Club as well.  Therefore, the letter/email you received from Lorna about receiving the last payment and her deducting £10 online fee, will not now apply.

As most of you are aware, we did not collect membership monies for 2021, however, club membership of £15 will be due in January 2022

I do hope that most people will return to the club, and I look forward to having some social contacts once more.

Best wishes,

Carol Brocklehurst

Prepare for Online Bridge

We want everyone to be able to carry on playing bridge with their regular partner despite the Corona virus. We are currently organising online games just for club members.

The EBU is also organising national games online.

However the prerequisite for you to take part is to acquire a 'Bridge Base Online' (BBO) Username. We are asking members to do this ASAP. BBO is the largest online bridge platform and is the one we use with robots to avoid sit-outs. You can play on BBO on a computer, a tablet or a smartphone. For Apple devices you can go to the App Store and search for 'Bridge Base Online' and download the App. Similarly for all other phones and tablets you can find the App in Play Store. On a Windows laptop or desktop you do not need to download anything simply Google (other search engines are available) 'Bridge Base Online' and click on the link.

In all these routes the first screen to which you come will ask you to Log In or to become a member for free. You can take this second option which will allow you to create your own Username. You are limited to 10 characters but it can be whatever you want so long as someone else has not already taken it. Your password can also be something simple of your own choice there are not complicated restrictions as there are with sites involving monetary transactions. Once you have done this you will be able to Log In and join the EBU games or the club games. However you will see that there are already lots of games there for you to play. In amongst the 'Public Clubs' there is even an Acol Club but first of all you might want to try some of the 'Solitaire' games where you just play with 3 robots so you can become familiar with how you bid and play a card.

When you are ready to join in with the Club games please enter using the forms from the 2nd menu option on the left .

In order for you to play in our club games we need to know what your BBO Username is. If you have one already or when you acquire one please fill in the form below and click 'Send Message' just once so that we have a record of it.

Broadstairs Bridge Club
Broadstairs Bridge Club

Welcome to Broadstairs Bridge Club. The club is a member of the English Bridge Union. We play at the Portland Centre, St Peter's Church Hall, Hopeville Avenue, Broadstairs CT10 2TR on Wednesday evenings at 6:50pm, on Monday afternoons at 2:20pm and on Tuesday afternoons at 2:00pm. Also we host a Social Bridge/Gentle Duplicate evening (playing fewer boards) on the second and fourth Tuesday in the month at 6:50pm. If you want to know more about us email sharon.bayne@btopenworld.com

 -----------------------------------

We aim for a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, playing about 22/24 boards and stopping for a tea/coffee break with biscuits (18 boards with no break on a Monday). Visitors are welcome but please come as a pair (or use our partner finding service, see below), and please note that space is limited so please telephone ahead (for further details please click on 'Information' then 'Where and When').  Facilities for the disabled are excellent.

Membership is currently open and if you would like to become a member please obtain a Membership Form from one of the Committee or download one from the website.  Hopefully you will find any other details you are looking for on this web site. For a bit more information about the club click on 'information' then 'general'.

HOST AND PARTNER FINDING

We want to ensure that everyone who wants to get a game at Broadstairs can do so. The Message Board has always been available for anyone wishing to leave requests for partners and continues to be so. Also in the in the Members Area of the web site requests for partners can be placed against specific events in the calendar and this also continues.

However there are two services which are being run by Rosemary English. The first is a Partner Finding Service.

If you know you will need a partner call and leave a message, or text Rosemary English on 07948185033, or email her on g-r.english@tiscali.co.ukPlease leave contact details, dates, and any preferences.  Rosemary will co-ordinate the service, keeping a list for all partner requests for upcoming sessions, and notify you if a suitable partner is available.

Please try to register your partner requests at least 24 hours in advance, as on-the-day requests may be difficult to match.

If anybody does not regularly play a particular session, but is happy to consider occasional games with those seeking a partner at short notice, please register an interest.

On Wednesdays we are able to guarantee a partner for single players (apart from special events such as Sim pairs) through our Host System.

To get a game please telephone Rosemary on 07948185033 as far in advance as possible and in any event no later than 12.00 noon on the day. Leave a message including your name and that you want to play on the Wednesday and turn up at the club by 6:40pm. If there are an even number of such requests you will be paired up on arrival. If there are an odd number the host will play to make up the numbers. The host will be contacted either way by 1:00pm to be told whether or not they are needed.

Regular Wednesday players are expected to act as host no more than once a year. Please look on the calendar to see on which night you are needed. If you cannot make that date please swap with another member and let Rosemary know so that the records can be updated. Please make sure you are available to receive the call from Rosemary between 12 noon and 1:00pm.

This service is meant to be a facility for visitors and members whose regular partner is not available. It is not intended to be used on a long-term basis as a substitute for establishing a regular partnership.
