WEDNESDAY 4 SEPTEMBER - BRIDGEMATES

We will be experimenting with Bridgemates this Wednesday (4 September).  This should allow scores for the session to be instantly available at the end of the session.

It would be helpful if players could bring their EBU number with them as this will be used instead of the usual start sheet.

For those who have not used Bridgemates before, help in using them to record scores will be available.

Festival of Bridge

Bradgate is celebrating the Festival of Bridge and raising money for Cancer Research UK

On Monday 9th September and Wednesday 16th September we will be running a Charity Pairs.

Closure effect on competitions

With the unexpected closure of the Rothley Centre, you might be wondering how this affects the competitions that are running over the summer.

Mondays - Hercock Summer Trophy

This was advertised as best four out of ten weeks. With the Rothely centre being closed for two Mondays, we will be extending the competition for two weeks to include 2nd & 9th September.

Wednesdays - Summer Pairs and Summer Pairs 9-High

These competitions were advertised as the best four scores in June, July and August. With the Rothley Centre being closed for just one Wednesday, this reduces the available weeks from thirteen to twelve. This competition will not be extended.

Wednesday 21st August 2024 - Wrong Boards

WRONG BOARDS

Due to the Rothley Centre being closed for three consecutive Mondays in August due no caretaker being available, we dealt and delivered three weeks worth of boards for Wednesdays.

Unfortunately, on Wednesday 21st August the Director picked up the wrong boards that had been played two weeks prior. The first time the Director was aware that we had an issue was after the scores had been published when a player contacted us to say that hands on the web site did not match the travellers.

We investigated and found that the boards that we played that afternoon were the same boards as 7th August.

There is a precedence that if none of the players realised during the session that these boards had been played before then we would let the scores stand. That was our initial assumption. However it have come to light that some players did recognise this during the session (even though the Director wasn't informed). Because some players have recognised the board, they have an unfair advantage over other player. So we have no choice to void the results.

This week was part of the Summer Pairs and Summer Pairs 9-High competitions. It is club policy that for competitions that are best four scores over a three month period that we do not extend the competition if there are weeks that we don't play or weeks that we don't get a score, provided we reach a minimum of ten weeks. So this year's Wednesday Summer competitions will now be over eleven weeks.

Note that when Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday then the Winter Pairs, which is the best four scores in December, January and February, will only be played over eleven weeks.

In summary:

  • The results will not count towards the Summer Pairs and Summer Pairs 9-High competitions
  • The results will not be uploaded to the EBU for NGS and Masterpoint purposed
  • The Summer Pairs and Summer Pairs 9-High competitions will not be extended and will finish on Wednesday 28th August

It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that our treasurer and much valued club member, David Twells, passed away on Sunday evening. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

The funeral will be 11am Thursday 15th August at Loughborough Crematorium, followed by a Wake at the White Horse in Birstall. No flowers thank you.

Sally Harris joins the nonagenarian club

Congratulations to Sally Harris who has joined our growing band of nonagenarians.

Thanks to Vicki McCoy for making cakes for celebrating this on Wednesday.

I should like to thank the club members and the committee properly for the gorgeous basket of flowers and the very precious card with everyone's signature. What a delightful surprise! I was quite overwhelmed!

It is such a friendly club with a good standard of Bridge. I'm so lucky to be a member.

Thankyou again to everyone and best wishes

Sally Harris
