Howell movements normally involve each pair in the room playing against
every other pair resulting in just one overall winner in the session.
Sometimes, depending on the numbers present, you may occasionally
not play against every other pair in the room.
Whilst some consider this type of movement to be unfair -
due to not every pair having the equal number of points -
and maybe also missing out on playing a supposedly weaker pair -
the difference in points per pair per board normally works out at only
between 0.5pts and 1.2 points per board per pair over the entire session.
Of greater significance to the overall results are more common factors
such as distribution, the general shape of your hand and indeed,
who your opponents were on certain boards and their playing system.
It has been demonstrated, on more than one occasion, that the pair
with the fewest average points can indeed still win a Howell session.
As starting positions are always drawn at random before the start of each session
it is quite literally 'the luck of the draw' as to which hands you get each session.
Please try and enjoy your bridge no matter what the circumstance.
