Howell Movements

Howell movements normally involve each pair in the room playing against

every other pair resulting in just one overall winner in the session.

Sometimes, depending on the numbers present, you may occasionally

not play against every other pair in the room.

Whilst some consider this type of movement to be unfair -

due to not every pair having the equal number of points -

and maybe also missing out on playing a supposedly weaker pair -

the difference in points per pair per board normally works out at only

between 0.5pts and 1.2 points per board per pair over the entire session.

Of greater significance to the overall results are more common factors

such as distribution, the general shape of your hand and indeed,

who your opponents were on certain boards and their playing system.

It has been demonstrated, on more than one occasion, that the pair

with the fewest average points can indeed still win a Howell session.

As starting positions are always drawn at random before the start of each session

it is quite literally 'the luck of the draw' as to which hands you get each session.

Please try and enjoy your bridge no matter what the circumstance.

APPEALING AGAINST A DECISION MADE BY A TD / SCORER

Following a recent disagreement over a decision made by the TD / scorer, during a normal club session, we have been asked by a member to clarify what the procedures and policy of the club are regarding appealing against any such decision.

In all honesty the club did not have any such policy as it had never been needed before.

However, as all our members are perfectly within their rights to appeal against any decision they believe to be unfair or unreasonable, we have now addressed this issue and details of the appeal process for this club are attached.

Important things to remember before making any such appeal are:

  1. Try and resolve the issue amicably at the time it occurs or certainly by the end of the session BEFORE the results are displayed to the members.
  2. Always be calm and respectful to each other when discussing the issue.
  3. If the TD / scorer stands their ground on the decision they have made you should accept that decision with good grace … but inform them that you are reserving your right to appeal against that decision.
  4. Remember that appealing a decision may cost you money *, and the club money **, as well as creating additional work for club officials.
  5. Consider whether your appeal, particularly if it is just in a normal club session, is worth pursuing as it may potentially cause unnecessary ill feeling over such a relatively minor issue.

Appeal Fees

*A fee of £20 will need to be paid to the club if you decide to make a formal appeal – this fee will be reimbursed to you only if your appeal is successful.

*If your appeal to the club is unsuccessful, but you still wish to pursue the matter with the YCBA their appeal fee is currently around £50.

**The bridge club may incur additional Pay to Play fees from the EBU – of approximately 50p for every member in that session – if results have to be amended and resubmitted at a later date.
