Unit 146 Board Meeting Minutes
September 21,2026

Present: Kathy Haglich, Mike Fairbanks, Paul Howarth, Charles Heilig, Debbie Line, Linda White, Kerry Weil
Absent: Steve Rose, Maureen Brines, Herb Hurst, Janet Fuller(NC)
A motion to consent agenda was carried. Correction to the June 28,2026 minutes: Our lease for the bridge center has the option to extend three more years but has not been carried out.
TREASURER REPORT: Balance in checking is$15,958.99 and balance in CD is $35,882.71
The summer sectional in July was well attended with 95 tables. The NLM sectional in August was well attended as well with 40 tables
PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Our membership has 227 paid members and 43 guest members of which 22 are active and 21 are inactive.

Sunshine Committee: At least twelve cards were sent out this quarter. If you hear of a member who needs a card, let Kathy know.
OLD BUSINESS: The Howard Miller rememberance is referred to the Bridge Center board for consideration not our Bridge Unit board.
Newcomers/Mentor games: Chuck H. will find a new coordinator/committee to investigate “rules” for these groups concerning “free” play. This subject is tabled until a coordinator is found.
NEW BUSINESS: Annual membership meeting/luncheon and game will be Sunday December 6,2026.
Nominating committee for Board of Directors are Chuck M. And Linda.
Goodwill committee: Stephanie M. And Lois F. were nominated and elected.
The subject of free drinks for first time players will have to be considered by the Bridge Center board and not us.
BYLAWS AMENDMENTS (presented by Pete Haglich): Consider 3 amendments at the December 6,2026 meeting.
1. Codify ACBL guest members i.e. they cannot serve on the board or serve as officers.
2. Shrink the board from 11 to 9.
3. Nominations committee formation deadline from 90 to 60 days with 3 member bylaws committee with only one board member.
Doug L. suggested cleaning up the articles of the organization which was tabled until the next meeting.
Kathy moved to remove Maureen Brines from president of our organization and was passed. Chuck moved to nominate Kathy Haglich as our new president. It passed.

Call to Order: 4:35 pm
Treasurer Report:
Balances: $15,612 in checking and $35,315 on our CD.
April Spring sectional: Revenue of $5288 with a net loss of $139. Food will continue to be offered as long a BCHR is able to provide this service.
Unit Game Rent: Unit game rent will now be paid quarterly using fewer checks.
Playing Space: Bridge Center of HR lease has been extended for 3 years with no rent increase.
President's Report:
End of Term: Maureen will be stepping down from President of our board at the end of the year. Kathy Haglich (VP) will be taking over the next two board meetings in September and December until elections. Debbie Line oversaw elections in 2025 and is suggested to do it for 2026.
Tournaments: Pete Haglich has taken over as the Tournament Coordinator for Tracy Brines.
D6 Regional VAB: Peter and Kathy have been chosen by D6 to chair the November 2026 D6 Regional in VAB. Barbara Duer will be Partnership Chair. D6 voted to increase entry fees from $18 to $20 per session starting in the November Regional.
Steve requested a meeting of all Regional Volunteers as soon as possible. Many volunteers chosen are unaware of what needs to be done.
New Directors: Maureen suggested 4 interested members be chosen to take the online ACBL director course which our unit would pay for with the board approved $500.
Education: Jennifer Douglas has 4 new students in her beginning bridge lessons at the center. Terri & Dennis have started bridge lessons for beginners. They have 12 students. Caroline Riegle continues to teach advanced beginners on Saturdays. Wrus and Tom continue to have lessons before their games.
Mentorship Program: Barbara Duer requested mentor program be added to our website. Our unit only pays for two games per month per mentee.
New Business: Howard Miller Memorial: Suggestions made for naming a regional game in honor of Howard and/ or placing an Obituary ad in Bridge Bulletin. Barbara agreed to write the article if given the information.
Recruitment: Mike suggested free drinks for first time visitors for our center. That was tabled to next meeting. Barbara Duer suggested a "newbies" game perhaps once a month with only 18 boards but still sanctioned. We will talk with Caroline Reigle to see if she is willing to take this idea on. Free games are still being offered to members who bring a new player to our center.

The original minutes for the 2021 Annual Membership Meeting omitted the names of the elected Board of Directors members (Louise Gordon, Peter Haglich, Marshall Hutto, Jack Mallery, and Jim Vroom were elected). This version corrects that and will be subject to approval by the Membership at the next Membership meeting.
