September Hand of the Month - from RealBridge 16/09/26

The bidding is interesting.  West made the decision to start with 1♣ and then to try to bid spades twice.  His partner stretches a bit to bid diamonds twice.  Meanwhile North-South find their heart fit and after some thought go for the 4 contract.

The bidding varied a bit at other tables and most stopped in 3

Now to the play...

West makes the pretty standard lead of K .  Declarer wins with the ace and assesses the situation.  It looks like there are two spades losers and two diamond losers, plus declarer must capture the queen of trumps.  That's too many potential losers.

Look for clues in the bidding and you might find a way...

West has lots of cards in the black suits.  He bid clubs first, then spades twice.  He's probably 6-5. The K looks like a singleton, so he has at most one heart.
East has long diamonds and probably lack of support for West's suits.

Start with  A and then finesse the queen.  Proceed to draw East's remaining trump.

Next eliminate the club suit by playing ace, king and a ruff.

The easier thing to do now is to make one spade trick from your king-queen and then throw West in to give you a ruff-and-discard.

You lose two spades and just one diamond.

Contract made - yet again!
