| Abbey Smith! |
I was taught Bridge by my Dad when I was 12 years old and have been playing ever since. I was fortunate to get the opportunity to enter junior trials when I was 16 and managed to be selected for the British Junior Squad and the English Under 20s team. In 1995 it was a privilege to be asked to partner Sandra Landy in the Beijing World Championships. At the time I was the youngest player to represent their country at non-junior level for any Nation. The highlight of my international experience was being a member of the British Ladies Team which won the European Championships in Malta in 1999.
In 2012 I started teaching bridge - which I love! I decided to set up my own bridge club so that I could nurture those that I teach and now the Abbey Smith Club is thriving and has been, and still is, an amazing experience teaching and playing with so many enthusiastic club members every week. At the moment I am teaching 50 beginners and the club has 250 members! Having raised a family, with three girls now embarking on their own adult lives, I have re-ignited my passion for playing at international level. This year - 2026 - I will be playing for England in the European championships with my good friends Sally Anoyrkatis, Martin Jones and John Athey. I have also had the pleasure of playing a part in Team Nettleton with Diana Nettleton, my partner in the team Tom Paske, and David Gold.
