The Origin of Playing Cards

The origin of playing cards ♠   ♣

Playing cards originated in China and dates back to around the year 1120.  Originally cards were used for fortune telling and gambling.
Cards were introduced into Italy and Spain around 1370, probably coming from Egypt and were introduced in Italy in 1440.

Bridge is based on the game of whist in that 4 people play and win ‘tricks’ and dates to 16th century

Bridge may be named after the Galata bridge in Istanbul, where British soldiers crossed the bridge to a coffee house to play cards.  Harold Vanderbilt introduced a scoring system in the 1920s

Acol bridge started in England in 1930s (called after Acol Road, Kent) first book written by Ben Cohen and Terence Reese

DLGC Bridge Club

DLGC Bridge Club can trace its history back to the foundation of the Golf Club.  The first record is in 1910 when the Council discussed the need to purchase a Book of Rules on Bridge.

President Ruth welcomes you
President Ruth welcomes you

I’m delighted to serve as President of DLGC Bridge Club for 2023-24. Having enjoyed the previous year as Vice-President on the committee, I had fantastic mentorship from Teresa Whitaker who steered us through the previous two years. I wish to thank last year’s committee and welcome some new members to our team. David Whitaker is our Vice-President and Secretary. Peter Chapman continues as Treasurer, Helen Hearnden will run Monday morning bridge along with Barbara O’Connell. Deirdre Waters will take on administration of the Bridge Webs and will also receive training as a TD.

The club has developed well over the last few years and continues to participate in the Rose Bowl (an inter-club competition). We have four teams in the Massey League thanks to managers Moya Murphy and Teresa Whitaker. We have,  appropriately a new trophy this year - a four-person team event to honour our long-term member Piers Segrave Daly. This trophy is a new major competition and will be held on the 10th November with an external tournament director.

The role of the TD has changed dramatically over the last few years and I would particularly like to thank David Whitaker who has thrown open the door of his home and trained many members to be proficient in running the technology of our Monday and Friday competitions.

This bridge club has an ethos of inclusion, friendship and member participation. It is always a pleasure to experience such a warm atmosphere.

I hope to encourage as many members and guests to experience this. I wish you all the very best for the coming year, and yes there will be a  weekend away to look forward to in March 2024!!

DLGC Bridge Away Weekend

8th – 10th March 2024

The Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone

The DLGC Bridge Club embarked on an unforgettable away trip to the scenic Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone last weekend. The itinerary was packed with activities catering to various interests of the members.

The adventure began with Cathal's walking group venturing to Yew Point, exploring the natural beauty of the surroundings. Meanwhile, President Ruth led the golfing enthusiasts to Athlone GC for a day on the greens.  Back at the hotel later in the evening, 52 bridge players gathered under the expert guidance of TD Larry, engaging in riveting games across the tables. On Saturday morning, members indulged in retail therapy and leisure activities before returning for more intense bridge sessions. A unique experience awaited Monday morning bridge players with 'a draw for partners', adding a fresh twist to the games.

As excitement brewed over the Ireland/England rugby match, members gathered to cheer on their teams while enjoying refreshments. The evening was highlighted by a sumptuous 3-course dinner followed by lively entertainment, courtesy of Margaret, Teresa, Owen, Annette and Margaret, who provided a memorable musical soiree.  Sunday morning saw a smaller group staying behind to squeeze in a few more bridge boards before biding farewell.  With gratitude to TD Larry, the dedicated staff of Hodson Bay Hotel, and the enthusiastic participation of all members, the weekend concluded on a high note, leaving everyone refreshed and ready to celebrate Mothering Sunday.

In conclusion, the DLGC Bridge Club's trip to the Hodson Bay Hotel was a resounding success, filled with camaraderie, competition, and unforgettable memories.

Covid-19 Remembered
Covid-19 Remembered

Covid -19 was a deadly pandemic that swept across the world in March 2020. The members of Dunlaoghairegolf Bridge Club are very grateful to Declan Doyle who brought the bridge club online during President Marie Daly's year. Declan helped members to access the online club and also ran an inter club competition during this period. He set up a WhatsApp group which created solidarity among players and most of all it was great fun. Online bridge was a life saver during the pandemic. Declan is a master player and also allowed open access to his Dargle club on Sunday nights. Declan's hard work was acknowledged at the AGM in September 2021, where he was given a gift and also at the AGM in September 2022 and 2023.

We also remember those who died during the pandemic such as Merryn Keogh (RIP)and Joan Walsh (RIP) and relatives and friends of members. Teresa Whitaker donated a trophy to honor the memory of those who died during the pandemic. This prize will be considered a major and will be awarded to the Monday morning players.

A hardy group of golfers had fun playing golf in Athlone Golf Club which is situated right beside the Hodson Bay Hotel.
