Goldhawks Friendly Bridge
Introduction
Goldhawks Lunch
Goldhawks bridge is the name we give to our bridge activities aimed at less experienced bridge players, or those who have no aspirations to reach the top echelons of bridge. Goldhawks are players who above all want to enjoy their bridge.
Goldhawks play bridge for fun, to meet others, and to enjoy themselves amongst a friendly and supportive group of players. Goldhawks are always interested in trying to get a little better at playing—everyone enjoys doing well at the bridge table—but it is not the be‑all and end‑all of our sessions.
Duplicate Sessions
Tuesday Daytimes. Goldhawks currently meet every Tuesday at 11.00am for bridge play which runs until around 3.00pm with a half‑hour break for lunch. We run small duplicate movements so everyone plays against everyone else, creating a good social atmosphere. Some players come with partners, but many also come along as singletons and are paired up on the day. Goldhawks don’t mind if there is an odd number of players—they will happily sit out and watch for a board or two. And if you can only come along for part of the session, that is not a problem either—we cater for all, and all are welcome.
Overseeing the bridge is Chris Duckworth, one of the club’s most friendly and helpful expert players. She is on hand to offer advice if asked (but you don’t need to if you don’t want to!).
The table money (inclusive of unlimited teas and coffees) for these sessions is £8 a head for club members, or £12 a head for non‑members. Lunches are available from the club’s café/bar at very reasonable prices—toasted sandwiches (£3.50) and freshly prepared omelettes with salad (£5) are the most popular choices. You can come along as often as you like as a non‑member, to see how things go, though most people who come enjoy themselves so much that they join the club straight away! Club membership, which is open to all, costs £60 p.a. and entitles you to member rates in regular YCBC club duplicates and other club events as well.
Thursday Evenings. A second weekly Goldhawks session takes place every Thursday evening at 7.00pm, finishing no later than 9.30pm. As on Tuesdays, one of the club’s friendly experts (usually Shelley Shieff) is available to organise things and offer advice and the format is very much the same as for the daytime sessions. The table money for the evening sessions is £10 a head for members or first time guests, or £14 for visitors after their first attendance.
Seminars
From time to time, seminars are held covering a range of topics aimed at helping Goldhawks to improve their bidding and play.
A new series of seminars on various bidding and play topics is being planned for early 2024.
Come Along!
There is no need to pre-book any Goldhawks session—you can just come along. Here’s a picture of Alan and Vikki from Birmingham who popped in when in London visiting their grandchildren. They enjoyed themselves so much they plan to return in a few weeks when next back in town. All visitors are very welcome and we guarantee you will have a good time.
