Mixed Teams February 2026—Report
Young Chelsea Mixed Teams February 2026 Winning Team of Brian Callaghan, Rosie White, Brendan Doolan and Chris Duckworth
On Saturday 28 February the Young Chelsea launched a new style of event—a mixed teams. Unlike the Hubert Phillips (the national mixed knockout teams), which merely requires at least one male and one female to be playing, this tournament stipulated that both partnerships be mixed. Eleven teams contested and play started at 1.30pm with a break for complimentary coffee and biscuits at half time. In order to play a full four boards against each of the other ten teams, the finish would have to be a little later than the advertised time. Tournament director Gitte Hecht‑Johansen polled the players to check they were OK with this (they were) and the event finished at 6.45pm.
Scoring was by total IMPs. Congatulations to the winning team of Brian Callaghan, Rosie White, Brendan Doolan and Chris Duckworth who finished well in front on 106 IMPs. (Rosie inducted Brian as a temporary Raven—her team in the YC Super League—for the day.) Prizes were a bottle of wine to each player. And thanks to Kath Stynes for the photo.

The Young Chelsea Knockout (YCKO) is the club’s annual teams event that runs on “double elimination” lines—every team has to lose two matches before it is knocked out. Teams may consist of up to six players, all of whom must be paid‑up club members before taking part in a match. (Anyone who needs to may subscribe via the payments page.)
For 2026, the event will be played as a face‑to‑face competition with matches held at the club. Matches will be charged at the standard price. A team may choose whether it wants half‑time refreshments. For matches of up to 32 deals, this is currently either £12.50 per player (with refreshments) or £10.00 per player (without). Should the club exceptionally allow you to play a match online, the charge per match (debited from the captain’s/organizer’s YC account) will be the same as if played face to face. No other entry fee will be charged. Prize money will be £800 for the winning team, £300 for the runners‑up.
The winning team will hold the YCKO Trophy for the following year and will be eligible for a play‑off match against the team winning the LMBA London Championship Teams‑of‑four to decide which team will represent London in the 2024 Lederer invitation tournament.
Please enter by the end of February on the registration page of the website. or by emailing the club manager at manager@ycbc.co.uk. (Entries are now closed.)

With just 16 teams competing, after Round Four there will be one undefeated team and five once‑defeated teams. These six teams will play a quarter‑final, matches being decided by a random draw while minimizing (nearly always completely avoiding) the number of re‑matches. Then:
a) If the undefeated team wins there will be one undefeated team and two once‑defeated teams. The undefeated team will get a bye to the final and the other two teams will play a semifinal match, the winner of which will play the undefeated team in the final. The undefeated team may claim eight extra deals if behind after 48 deals.
b) If the undefeated team loses there will be four once‑defeated teams and there will be a straightforward semifinal and final, with no one claiming extra deals.

Young Chelsea Championship Pairs 2026 for the Franklin To Cup—Report
Winners Daniel McIntosh and Claire Robinson
The annual Young Chelsea Championship Pairs was contested by 21 pairs over 49 deals as a two‑session event on Sunday 1 February. Every pair played two or three deals against each of the other pairs. Congratulation to winners, Daniel McIntosh and Claire Robinson, on a score of 63.21%. They keep the Franklin To trophy for a year and their names go up on the honours board. This was an impressive show of consistency from Claire, who also won last year in a different partnership.

Young Chelsea Knockout 2025 Final—Report
Young Chelsea Knockout 2025 winners team Atisen—Stefano Tommasini, Neil Rosen, John Atthey, Sebastian Atisen and (absent from the photo) Ambrose Holmes‑Mackie
The final of the Young Chelsea Knockout 2025 took place, only about a month overdue, on Saturday 18 January 2026. The players introduced a novel twist by opting to play the 48‑deal match in four 12‑deal stanzas (instead of six 8‑deal ones).
The teams contesting were Muller (David Muller, Trevor Mathews, Brian McGuire and Gordon Rainsford) and Atisen (Stefano Tommasini, Neil Rosen, John Atthey, Sebastian Atisen and and Ambrose Holmes‑Mackie). Team Atisen played four handed in the final with Holmes‑Mackie sitting out. For a change both teams were once‑defeated, so there was no prospect of the extra eight deals that an undefeated team could claim. If the Atisen team looks familiar, the same four players won the 2024 final as team Tommasini.
Team Muller were trailing by 22 IMPs after 36 of the 48 deals, so still had some hope. However, the leaders didn’t let the trophy slip from their grasp. Congratulations to team Atisen who finished 41 IMPs ahead after the final set.
The winners and runners‑up received prizes of £800 and £300 respectively.

In Division One team Jupiter had rearranged their last scheduled match for an earlier date and established a target for the other contenders. One of them, team Leslie fell short. But team Hillman did just enough to finish first, nearly 2 VPs in front. Congratulation to them (John Atthey, Keith Bennett, Brian Callaghan, Rob Cliffe, Richard Hillman, Neil Rosen and Nicola Smith). Prizes were the same as in the Spring season; the winning team received £600.

In second place was team Jupiter (Christophe Grosset, Andrew Kay, Nicolas Leprovost, François Picard and John Vos) picking up a £200 prize.

Young Chelsea in Sicily—October 2025
Young Chelsea in Sicily—October 2025
The natural self‑organising tendencies of the YC Goldhawks group (actually months of ceaseless labour from Malcolm Mearns and Sara Chiappara) saw them and a bunch of hangers‑on out in Sicily for a holiday. It wasn’t strictly a bridge holiday, but the programme included bridge every afternoon. Most of the participants flew to Catania, the closest airport to the venue, Hotel Casale Milocca, in the countryside near Syracuse. A few hardier souls shepherded the bridge equipment there by car over mountain and sea.
The picture shows the group in the playing hall after the TicTac Pairs on 18 October, a significant date for Pam Avril who was there celebrating her 90th birthday (although she wasn't the oldest in the group). The meal afterwards featured a birthday cake sufficient for everyone (in other words, huge).

Help Ukraine Emergency Appeal—Report
Young Chelsea Appeal 2022—Ukrainian Staff
We are delighted to announce that we have raised the grand total of £5,521.21 for the Help Ukraine Emergency Appeal. The club organised a special fundraising duplicate on 6 March and our Ukrainian staff rallied round baking cakes and donating Ukrainian goods for sale. The event attracted a great mix of club members and others, all of whom gave very generously and the funds rolled in. We are very grateful to all, and every penny will go to the Ukrainian people.
