Alice McMillan RIP
We are very sad to report that Alice McMillan died this week at home after a short final illness. In all the years she was in London, she loved playing bridge at the Young Chelsea, and enjoyed the high standards of play.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Alice’s family and friends.

YC, Representing London, Wins 2026 Garden Cities Final
EBU Garden Cities Tophy Winners 2026, Young Chelsea: John Pemberton, Brian Callaghan, Chris Duckworth, John Dean, Aaron Hutton, Hanna Tuus and (missing from picture) Jon Cooke and Cameron Small
On Saturday 6 June the Young Chelsea BC, representing London, won the EBU Garden Cities Trophy. This is an inter-county competition for teams-of-eight, the final of which was played this year in the West Midlands Bridge Club in Solihull.
The picture shows six of the team: John Pemberton, Brian Callaghan, Chris Duckworth, John Dean, Aaron Hutton and Hanna Tuus. The other two, Jon Cooke and Cameron Small, had to dash off to catch a train (which they managed to do). Jon and Cameron were the anchor pair this year, just topping the cross-IMP ranking, but all the pairs were positive on cross-IMPs.
The cup will reside in the YC trophy cabinet until next year’s event.
The YC last won this tournament in 2011.

YC Qualifies to Represent London in the Garden Cities Regional Final 2026
Well done to team YC Pink: Richard Creamer, John Dean, Sally Brock, Barry Myers, Chris Duckworth, Brian Callaghan, David Burn and Frances Loughridge. They won, with 75 IMPs, 17 in front of second‑placed team Woodberry A, in the London qualifying heat for the Garden Cities Trophy played at the club on Thursday 26 March.
Six teams representing four clubs, each of which was allowed to put forward as many teams as it could raise, took part this year. These numbers were each one higher than in last year’s event.
The team members in the regional final on Saturday 9 May only have to belong to their qualifying club, but those from YC Pink who are available will play then representing London.

Magic Monday in the YCKO
Last Monday—23 March was Magic Monday at the London MindSports Centre, when three matches in the first round of the YCKO were played. Three teams from the top of the draw faced three teams from the bottom half, and there were some surprises in store.
Sushi lined up against Robbo’s Rabble. Sushi are not inexperienced, and one member, Kath Stynes, was fresh from triumph in the Hecht-Johansen teams at the weekend. But the seeding had placed their opponents as fourth. Sushi, however, weren’t daunted by this, and sailed (comparatively speaking) to victory by 3 IMPs.
Muller (seeded sixth) lined up against Lawrenzo and narrowly lost by 2 IMPs. That was 0–2 to the seeding panel.
Alas, the magic hat trick didn’t quite happen. Tequila Slammers were leading at half time, but they couldn’t quite keep it up, so although the seeding panel wasn’t completely disgraced, it was a close‑run thing, as Artificial Ignorance lurched into the next round, while Muller and Robbo’s Rabble joined the once‑defeated pool. Excellent performances from Sushi and Lawrenzo, and commiserations to Tequila Slammers, who narrowly missed out on being part of a Troika of Doom.

Help Ukraine Emergency Appeal—Report
Young Chelsea Appeal 2022—Ukrainian Staff
We are delighted to announce that we have raised the grand total of £5,521.21 for the Help Ukraine Emergency Appeal. The club organised a special fundraising duplicate on 6 March and our Ukrainian staff rallied round baking cakes and donating Ukrainian goods for sale. The event attracted a great mix of club members and others, all of whom gave very generously and the funds rolled in. We are very grateful to all, and every penny will go to the Ukrainian people.
