Yorkshire
League Results: the
top spot in Division 1 was keenly fought but York A, though the only team not
to lose a single match, was pipped by one point at the close by Bradford. Congratulations to York D who did not
lose a match either, came top of Division 9 and are promoted to Division 8. In Division 3 York B and C came a
creditable 3rd and 5th respectively. Many have expressed
an interest in the league and next Autumn we are planning to introduce a 5th
team from York, to be captained by Mike Dunne.
Congratulations
to
Wei Che Tham & Ian Hillman, winners of our Spring Equinox Handicapped Pairs
Event; Derek Horsley & Leena Wellings came 2nd and Charles &
Hazel Ward came 3rd.

Dates
for your diaries:
A
Regional ImproversÕ Pairs heat is being held on Monday 13th
April at York 6.45pm for 7.00 start.
It is open to any player below the rank of Master (i.e. less than 5,000
master points) and is an ideal starter tounament for players new to club
bridge. The top 50% will go through
to the final, which is being held at York on May 17th and
simultaneously the same hands with 3 other clubs in the North of England. Non-members are welcome to join in and
allowance will be made for slower play than usual.
Our
AGM will
be held on Thursday 21st May at 6.30pm. Please come and find out the latest news
concerning the club premises and plans for the future. Prize giving and bridge will follow.
The LadiesÕ Pairs event
(for the Wendy Horsley rose bowl) will be held on Sunday April 19th starting at
2.00pm (NOTE
not 6.00). If you intend coming, please enter your names on the sheet on the
notice board. There is no charge for table money so just turn up and enjoy
yourselves!
Best Practice: this series has been of interest for the past 3
years and the editor has been asked for repeats to re-inforce the importance of
some procedures. We start again with the STOP
card. The
point of this is to give your Left Hand Opponent (LHO) time to think rather
than a swift pass (nothing to think about) or a certain pause (something to
offer), either of which can give the partner unauthorised information. Best practice is that the STOP card is
kept on the table for 10 SECONDS after a player makes a jump bid, and the LHO
should not call (even if intending a swift pass) until it has been removed.
Subscriptions are
now due. There has been no increase in sub or
table money so far this year, but because we are a charity, please GIFT AID your subscription wherever
possible. This will turn your £20 into £25 and help our finances enormously.
The necessary forms are in the playing room.
Book
now for the Yorkshire Congress to be
held at
Harrogate May 29 – 31st. This
includes an ImproversÕ Pairs event (for a trophy) on the Friday, and green pointed open Pairs on the Saturday and open
Teams of 4 on the Sunday.
