MINUTES OF THE AGM HELD ON 30th JULY 2015.
The minutes were circulated. J Edwards noted that the minutes should record that the AGM agreed to all recommendations in the Treasurers report; the fees and subscriptions and the agreement to set up a reserve fund for large capital expenditure. The minutes were accepted as a true record. Proposed by D Thompson, seconded by R Dove.
MATTERS ARISING.
There were no matters arising.
TREASURER’S REPORT:
John Edwards provided a detailed breakdown of income and expenditure (previously circulated). John highlighted the club’s major expenditure to buy Bridgemate score pads and a club lap top. £1200 in loans for the dealing machine had been repaid; loans of £600 for the Bridgemates were still outstanding. The charity event had been successful. Hall fees had risen. Ruth continues to provide quality refreshments very economically. John summarised his years as Treasurer as one which had seen £5000 invested in technology and attendance had increased. John added this was excellent for a small club, but it had not happened by chance. It is now important to keep the momentum going by offering training and pushing membership.
Reg Dove asked why so little bank interest was received. John explained that interest rates were very low anyway, but the interest account had been used to purchase the dealing machine and it was considered not to be worth the bother of having a separate interest generating account.
The Treasurer’s report and proposals were agreed. Proposed by P Meats, seconded by R Gunn.
TEACHING AND CLUB DEVELOPMENT REPORT:
Toni Smith had previously circulated her report. Toni reported that the club’s objective of increasing membership, improving the standard of play and members enjoyment had been achieved. The sharing of tasks on club nights had not really worked well and there was a need for more members to receive EBU training in directing, and more members trained to use the scoring system. Class/seminar attendance was down on last year and this did need looking into. A show of hands for interest in daytime or evening classes was 50/50, so timing was not a factor.
Toni expressed the hope that a library of bridge books/teaching material could be built up for use by members. There could be a small charge.
Toni asked if there was any interest in a one off session on EBU Rules and Regulations? A show of hands suggested there was much interest.
David Tillcock thanked Toni for her input, and the great classes she runs.
TEAM CAPTAINS’ REPORT
Steve Fordham gave a report on behalf of all the teams:
Overall a successful season. The Red team after a mediocre start finished strongly to finish top of Division 2 by 14 points. The White team despite losing their last match 20-0 finished 2nd in Division 3, just 1 point ahead of the 3rd placed team. The Blue team in their first season performed creditably and managed to win 3 of their matches. Assuming that there are 3 divisions again next year that will mean that we have a team in each division for next season, this was our goal at the start of the season. It will also hopefully mean that there will be opportunities for anyone else that is interested in playing in the Teams competition next season which usually starts in October.
Woodborough again had 2 “Teams of 4” in the Winter League. The Woodborough team captained by Ray Furlonger finished 3rd and Six Pack captained by Phil Meats finished fourth. There is currently a Summer “Team of 4” league in progress and there are several club members involved in playing for different teams in this league.
There will be changes to the “Teams of 8” captains for next season; Ray Furlonger will be captain of the Red team, Phil Meats will captain the White team and Julia Furlonger the Blue team. Julia will also take on the role of fixture secretary for all 3 teams.
All of the team captains would like to thank everyone who played and helped with the organization of matches, and hope that everyone enjoyed playing, particularly those that had not previously played in Teams matches.”
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT:
Keith thanked the team captains for their hard work resulting in success. John was thanked for his time as Treasurer where he had guided us through major purchases. Jane was thanked for her many hours spent on club matters. Keith endorsed David comments about Toni’s input. Next year Keith hoped to put money aside as agreed by the AGM last year. All loans would be repaid by the end of the year.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS AND COMMITTEE
The Committee; Keith Spencer (Chairman), Jane Hall (Secretary), Phil Dale (Treasurer), R Furlonger, R Gunn, R Hooper, D Tillcock were elected en bloc. Proposed by Steve Fordham, seconded by John Glass.
ANY OTHER BUSINESS
Phil Meats thanked Keith for running the evenings.
Judith Glass thanked Ruth for organising the refreshments.
Clive Wood thanked all the committee for their hard work which is reflected in the large attendance this evening. Clive thanked Steve Fordham for getting the first team back into Division 1.
