The first club competition of the year was the Mixed Pairs for the Bartlett Bowl, won by Conor Murphy and Imogen Davies

The Surrey Teams of 8 was held at Richmond on 4th January.  Wimbledon sent three teams to complete in this challenging event - The event was won by Mayfield Red, with Wimbledon Red in second place - Well done to Gerard Thompson & Andrew Mann, Tim Pelling & Naomi Cohen, Barbara & Barry Stoker and Gordon O'Hair & Jim Laker

It is with great sadness that I report the death of ROSEMARY MORRICE who passed away peacefully at Epsom Hospital on 4th November 2025, aged 92, after a short illness. Rosemary played at WBC for many years, with me and others, until the Covid epidemic She certainly enjoyed her Bridge sessions and was a pleasure to play with She was a regular at Tuesday and Friday morning sessions, as well as the Wednesday lunchtime games She continued playing Bridge on-line until very recently!  I was informed by Rosemary’s daughter Anne Cossins Please join me in sending our condolences to Rosemary’s family

Thank you to everyone who came along to the Fun Bridge party on Thursday evening.  We had over 100 people at the event, from new beginners to seasoned players wanting a fun night out, we all had a great time!  Congratulations to the students who have just completed Beginning Bridge with Terry on Monday evenings, they were presented with their course completion certificates, congratulations to Peter McCarthy Ward and Rosemary Barett, who won the Fun Bridge with a score of 2080 - well done!

A massive thank you to everyone who supported the charity fundraising in aid of St Raphael’s Hospice - WBC members raised £6,688 in donations, raffle ticket sales and silent auction bids - The Charity Pairs on Sunday was the best attended since pre-covid, with 22 tables - Winners of the Scott Mitchell Salver were Tim Pelling and Naomi Cohen, making it the second time they have won the event - here they are being presented with the trophy by Billie Stephens, long time friend and bridge partner of Scott's   Winners of the raffle prizes will be notified by email - collect from the club -  Winning bids for WBC’s 12 Most Wanted and Brian and Nevena Senior will also be notified by email.

Congratulations to the winners of the latest Blue Pointed Swiss Pairs, held on Sunday,  30 pairs competed for the  top prize of £200, which was won by member Simon Edelsten, playing with Stephen Kennedy,  second place went to members Denise Grimston and Ann Ingel and third to visitors Andrew Briggs and Milli Fawssett;  the highest placed "non experts" (NGS <10) were members Linda Wilson and Stephen Horn (playing for the first time together) and visitors John Veal and David Birch (not in picture), who shared joint 11th place (very creditable out of a field of 30)  The next Blue Pointed event is on 15th February 2026.

A huge thank you to our 40 club experts who played with the novices on Thursday evening;  after a glass of wine and one of Ellen's excellent cheeseboards, we played 18 boards of duplicate bridge, in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere;  Our next Play with a Club expert will be in May 2026 and is aimed at novice players wanting to improve their bridge (mainly those currently having lessons and/or playing in at least the supervised duplicate sessions)

The Brunel Trophy has been contested annually since 1990 when it was presented to the Civil Engineers Bridge Club by Travers Morgan.  The format is a multiple teams-of-four event held over two sessions during the day at the headquarters of the Institute of Civil Engineers.  The winners this year were the Wimbledon team of Mike Skelly (captain), Hilary Stewart, Naomi Cohen and Tim Pelling with a score of 83 VPs.

We were delighted to have so many top players at the club on Sunday.  The competition was tough, with Anne Rosen & Nevena Senior, Ewa Wieczorek & Claire Robinson and Heather Dhondy & Alice Coptcoat taking the top three places.  The Marietta Andree trophy for top Wimbledon Bridge Club members was presented to Janet Cahm and Pat Bohan and the Marietta Andree award for the highest non experts was presented to Wendy Young and Charles Dixon by TD Richard.  Thanks to Ellen and Salma for the cream tea at the interval.

The winners of the Surrey Green Pointed teams, held on 20th September were the team of mostly WBC members: Kevin Robins, Graham Cunningham, Isabel Correia and Anthony Melbourne.  Well done.

Tanya Heasman and Ian Tree co-hosted a Guaranteed Events bridge holiday for Improvers near Stratford-Upon-Avon in mid September. The event ran over 4 nights with 9 tables of players. The morning sessions involved seminars on Planning The Play, Discards and Signals, and Responding To Overcalls, followed by morning bridge with prepared hands matching the seminars. The evening sessions were a combination of supervised and unsupervised duplicate. The organisers thought the event was very successful - but they would say that, wouldn't they! If you are interested in this or other sorts of bridge holiday and would prefer an independent and unbiased view, you might like to speak with any of the WBC-ers playing here in the final Championship Pairs event.

Congratulations to Lars McBride, who won the Individual competition held on Friday 19th September. The event was a great success, bringing together players of all standards to a friendly game.  A huge thank you to Harriet for all her work organising the players and the movement and to John Brierley for helping.  Thank you to Ellen and Anita for all their work in the kitchen.

It's been a very successful Summer Meeting in Eastbourne for Wimbledon Bridge Club members.  Gad Chadha and his partner Stephen Lee, Andrew Bannock and John Dagnall, and Helen Bickerstaff and June Middleton finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Open Pairs on Thursday.  5 Wimbledon members in the top three!

Gad continued his winning streak by taking the trophy at the main event, the Swiss Pairs.

In the one day Swiss Pairs, Wimbledon pair Tim Pelling and Naomi Cohen were second on the Saturday, joint first on the Sunday and overall winners.  Tim and Naomi teamed up with Miranda Fellows and Mike Lunn for the Swiss Teams event and won the 'B' flight.

It was marvellous to see so many students (both graduating, current and recent) and teachers coming together on Thursday evening to celebrate the graduating class of 2025!  After one of Ellen's superb cheeseboards and a glass (or two!) of wine, certificates were presented to those who have just completed the one-year course in Beginning Bridge.  Now the hard work is over, the fun can begin, and we look forward to seeing you at one of the supervised sessions over the summer.
