Bulletin

We have recently acquired an assortment of old WBU Journals and Newsletters, which enabled us to fill some of the gaps in our Porthcawl Congress History.  However, there is a huge gap between 1954 and 1987!!  If anyone has any info/pictures etc relating to the intervening years which we could include, then I would be delighted if they could email me.

Frances Williams R.I.P.

Many members in West Wales and beyond will be sad to hear the news that Frances Williams, affectionately known as San, passed away yesterday afternoon. She was highly thought of in bridge circles, and played in both Llanelli and Carmarthen clubs. She also set up and very successfully ran Llandybie Bridge club, which swelled so greatly that new members couldn't be accommodated at one time! The club sadly was ended by Covid and then disrepair to their venue.

Frances has been ill for quite some time, but continued to play at Carmarthen club until she went into hospital several weeks ago. She died peacefully at  home, surrounded by her family.

We send our condolences Frances' family.

Introduction to Bridge Base Online BBO

Introduction to BBO tutorial

BBO is a good starting point for using Online Bridge, here are a few pointers to get you online!

Register for BBO, it's FREE:

                               https://www.bridgebase.com/

Check out these videos:

            A Tour of BBO Features

                               https://youtu.be/nPStnNKVCQM

Know your way around BBO table

                                https://youtu.be/xyFULWYsVXc

Log in to BBO and try things out

  •  First try the Practice section, you can start a bidding table with your partner and try bidding against 2 robots
  • Next try Bridge Master in the Practice section, where you can test your declarer play at 5 levels (60+ problems at each level) this also gets you into using the site
  • Next go to Home and click on casual, you can play here for free either by just joining a table or clicking on "I have a partner take us to a table" this is very relaxed
  • Remember you need to alert your own bids by clicking the alert before completing the bid eg Weak 2 in H is entered by 2, Alert, type Weak, Hearts. Your partner does not see your alert
  • If you are playing against strangers you can click on their names to see where they are from etc. Assume all others are playing 5 C Majors and Strong NT

Practicing like this is very easy and fun. You can play for as long as you like, if you want to leave a table just click on your name and confirm, someone else will take you place..

Make sure that you give your friends your BBO name, click on the People link on the right, you can add your friends here and know when they are online

2025 Laidlaw Murray

Congratulations to Paul & Sophie Cunningham, Fu Cheung & Viking Yuen (pictured above) runaway winners of today's WWBA Teams of Four competition at Bancyfelin.  At the lunch break they were well clear of their nearest rivals (Peter Milewski, Mike Baker, Nicky Hancock & Martin Sheppard)  who made a valiant effort in the second session, but the gap was too big.  In 3rd position came Mike Best, David Birt, Tony Disley & Simon Richards.  Seven teams enjoyed a great day's bridge, organised and ably directed by our ATO Dave Nicklin. Thank you Dave!

2025 Ossie Evans Cup for Mixed Pairs

Congratulations to Rosie Preece and Howard Goss, winners of this year's WWBA Mixed Pairs competition, pictured above with Peter Milewski (WWBA Secretary)  In joint 2nd were Nicky Hancock & Martin Sheppard and Barry Thorne & Lucinda Booker, followed by Matt Greener & Gail Davis 4th, Nigel Astley & Sarah Walters 5th.

Rosie and Howard were part of our last year's winning President's Cup team, as were Martin, Nigel and Sarah!  Lovely to see you all on good form today; it certainly bodes well for the future of West Wales bridge!!

Many thanks to Dave Nicklin, our hard working ATO, for organising and directing today's event.

Full results below.                             Well done everyone!
