Jackie Clinton Venture Pairs

On Saturday 29th March at 2 pm our annual Jackie Clinton Venture Pairs event is to be held at The Old School. This competition is held in memory of past-Chairman Jackie Clinton and the winners are awarded the Clinton Cup. As Jackie requested, the format for this event is that one player in each pair will be less-experienced and the other will be experienced. Anyone may participate but no pre-arranged partnerships are permitted. Participants will be separated into the two categories of less-experienced and experienced based on their handicap at the beginning of March and will be paired by a random draw on the day to play a maximum of 24 boards. This is a light-hearted and fun event with a light tea served halfway through, finishing no later than 5.45 pm. The cost is £5 and all proceeds go to the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Participants must sign up in advance; a sign-up form is available here or email Club Secretary Chris Jago.

47th Annual General Meeting

Our 47th Annual General Meeting will be held at 7pm on Tuesday 6th May at The Old School Cuckfield, followed by bridge finishing by 10.15pm. Details of the format of the meeting are set out in Para. 10 of our Constitution. Nominations are invited for the posts of Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and up to 8 Committee members. Any member may propose a Resolution for discussion, which needs a Seconder, and nominations for the Committee can be made and seconded by any member of two years' standing (but the nominee can be any member irrespective of length of membership). In all cases, such proposals should be sent to Club Secretary Chris Jago at secretary@westsussexbc.co.uk by Saturday 19th April.

AGM documents and reports will be provided here as they become available:

1) Official Notice of 47th Annual General Meeting
2) Minutes of Last Year's AGM held on 2nd May 2024
3) Agenda
4) Chairman's Report

5) Balance Sheet
6) Income and Expenditure Statement

February Winners

At the end of each month, winners are awarded prizes for handicapped results based on their best three Tuesday evening sessions played during the month. Please join us in congratulating our February champions, Peter Berry and David Young.

Winners of free plays for any games played during March are Norman Hardy and Neil Watts. Their names were drawn in our monthly prize drawing based on attendance which took place at our evening game on Tuesday, 4th March.

Mixed Pairs Champions
Mixed Pairs Champions

Congratulations to Mary Guy-Jones and Colin Mallows who are the 2025 WSBC Mixed Pairs Champions. Known prior to 2016 as the Eric Valentine Reeves Memorial Prize, the Mixed Pairs Championship is played as close as possible to Valentine's Day; this year the event fell on Tuesday, 11th February. In addition to the overall winners, a Flitch prize is awarded to the leading married pair, and our 2025 winners are David and Andrea Galpin.

WhatsApp Group for Finding a Partner

The WSBC WhatsApp group helps members find bridge partners, complementary to the Find-a-Partner message board here on the website, and members are welcome to use either or both methods to help find either a regular or one-game-only partner. If you're a WhatsApp user and would like to join the group, please contact Jane Lawrence via webmaster@westsussexbc.co.uk.

Monthly Prizes

In addition to our annual competitions, members may win unlimited free plays based on monthly attendance at face-to-face Club sessions. To be eligible to enter the monthly prize drawing, members must have played at The Old School at least 3 times during the preceding month. Those who have played at least 6 times will have 2 entries to the draw and those who have played at least 9 times will have 3 entries. The draw will take place at the first session of each month before play begins and two winners will be chosen at random on the picker wheel. Winners are then excluded from the following month's prize draw. A list of eligible members for both current and previous months can be seen by selecting Competitions on the menu.

For those members who like to play on Tuesday evenings, a prize is awarded each month based on the handicapped results of at least 3 sessions in the month.

WSBC Online

We are still offering online bridge for Club members only through a partnership with Avenue and Lewes Clubs. Two weekly sessions are available on BBO: Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm and Thursday afternoons at 1.30pm. If you would like to play and are not already registered, please contact Ed Barter (membership@westsussexbc.co.uk).

Convention Cards and Partnership Agreements

Whilst not making it compulsory, the Committee would like to encourage all partnerships to have an agreed convention card. You can use your own layout, fill in one of the blank formats to be found on the EBU website or use the simple form on the front page of the score card. The EBU website has some suggested convention cards for basic systems. Having a written partnership agreement obviously helps consistency in bidding and playing and also improving your bridge.
