Bridge Scene - 24 April 2026

Bridge lessons starting on Tuesday

Lessons at the Westport Bridge Club start this coming Tuesday Tuesday 28 April at 7pm.

Bridge is a “tricks and trumps” game.  It’s most similar to other card games like 500, euchre, 45s, hearts and whist. But, we’ve had people in Westport who have become good bridge players without ever having played any other card game.

Each lesson is about 90 minutes long.  The lessons go for 10 weeks.  We know that people starting to learn our great game will have a range of learning styles and other “life” commitments.  We aim to tailor the lessons to suit each individual.  There’s flexibility.  If you miss a lesson we will give you a catch-up.  At some point you will start to fit into regular club play on Monday and/or Thursday evenings.  From there, you might aim to play in tournaments further afield.

And, one of the features of modern day bridge is that it can be played online with and against other players from around New Zealand and the world.

Phone Ray Curnow on 027 680 9991 or email the club at westportbridgeclub@gmail.com for further information.  You can google the club’s website by entering “Westport Bridge Club”.

It’s been another busy week in the local club.

The first round of the Autumn Pairs was held on Monday.  Wendy Coburn and Jo Gear continued their recent run of good form coming top on 61.46 percent.  Phil Rutherford and Bevan Russell came second equal with Glenys Tyler and Jill Ireland on 52.08.

The second round of this year’s Championship Teams was held on Tuesday.  The Coburn team of Wendy Coburn, Jo Gear, Glenys Tyler and Val Mundy won all three of its matches and is currently leading the series.  The Ireland team is in second place.

The first round of the senior-junior Radford Pairs was held last night.  Val Mundy and Lucy Wratten took the early lead with 62.0.  Darryl Ireland and Bevan Russell were second on 59.0 followed by Jude Wood and Phil Rutherford on 58.0.

Introduction to Bridge

Bridge: A game for the mind and a bridge to friendship

If you think bridge is just a card game, think again. This timeless classic is much more than a pastime—it's a brain-boosting, friendship-forging adventure.

Bridge is renowned for its intellectual challenges, combining strategy, memory, and teamwork in a way that stimulates the brain like no other game. Studies have shown that regularly playing bridge can improve cognitive function and keep your mind sharp. But it’s not just about keeping your brain active; it’s also about making connections. Whether you’re an experienced player or a curious newcomer, bridge offers a unique chance to bond with people who share your interests.
