Westport team fourth in Nelson

The Westport team comprising of Jo Gear, Wendy Coburn, Phil Rutherford and Ray Curnow finished fourth out of 16 in the Nelson Open Teams tournament on Saturday after winning four of its six matches.

Jo Gear and Phil Rutherford won the club’s Kawatiri Pairs which concluded last Monday. They averaged 61.34 percent across the three sessions of play. Glenys Tyler and Vicki Russell finished in second place 58.76 followed by Colleen Wilson and Val Mundy on 51.06.

Jude Woods and Susan Dobson won Monday’s session with 58.93 followed by Vicki Russell and Glenys Tyler.  Bevan Russell and Rya Curnow came third equal with Colleen Wilson and Val Mundy on 51.79.

Val Mundy and Garry Howard won the Thursday session with 61.0.  Cherie Hooper and Jude Woods were second on 54.0 followed by Bevan Russell and Phil Rutherford on 53.0.

Tonight’s bridge lesson starting at 6pm is on the One No Trump opening bid and its responses.  All players are welcome.

Bridge: A game for the mind and a bridge to friendship

If you think bridge is just a card game, think again. This timeless classic is much more than a pastime—it's a brain-boosting, friendship-forging adventure.

Bridge is renowned for its intellectual challenges, combining strategy, memory, and teamwork in a way that stimulates the brain like no other game. Whether you’re an experienced player or a curious newcomer, bridge offers a unique chance to bond with people who share your interests.

Bridge is a “tricks and trumps” game.  It’s most similar to other card games like 500, euchre, 45s, hearts and whist. But, we’ve had people in Westport who have become good bridge players without ever having played any other card game.

Each lesson is about 90 minutes long.  The lessons go for 10 weeks.  By then, you will be starting to fit into regular club play on Monday and/or Thursday evenings.  From there, you might aim to play in tournaments further afield.

And, one of the features of modern day bridge is that it can be played online with and against other players from around New Zealand and the world.
