Swiss Pairs tournament tomorrow

A relatively small field of 12 tables will compete in the Westport 8B Swiss Pairs bridge tournament tomorrow.  The highest ranked pair is Steve Gray and Lindsey Guy from Richmond followed by Maurice Carter and Barbara Fechney from Marlborough.  The top ranked Westport pair is Ray Curnow and Phil Rutherford.  Play starts at 10am.  Spectators are welcome.

Six Westport players competed in the National Teams event held in Christchurch last weekend.  The all-Westport team of Michelle Ritchie, Wendy Coburn, Wayne Smith and Jo Gear came 21st with two wins out of seven matches.  Phil Rutherford and Ray Curnow playing alongside a pair from Christchurch and finished 33rd also with two wins.

Vicki Russell and Ellen Curnow have maintained their lead in the Westport Bridge Club’s Summer Pairs series after two out of three sessions of Monday play.  They are averaging 54.17 percent.  Garry Howard and Glenys Tyler are second equal with Phil Rutherford and Ray Curnow on 53.12.

Wendy Coburn and Wayne Smith won the Monday session with 58.33 followed by Val Mundy and Bevan Russell on 52.08.  Garry Howard and Glenys Tyler were third equal with Phil Rutherford and Ray Curnow on 50.0.

Susan Dobson and Kate O’Connor were the Thursday winner on a healthy 64.49.  Val Mundy and Jo Gear were second on 60.21.  Ray Curnow and Phil Rutherford were third on 54.65 followed by Wayne Smith and Wendy Coburn on 54.38.

Bridge: A game for the mind and a bridge to friendship

Bridge is a “tricks and trumps” game.  It’s most similar to other card games like 500, euchre, 45s, hearts and whist. But, we’ve had people in Westport who have become good bridge players without ever having played any other card game.

Each lesson is about 90 minutes long.  The lessons go for 10 weeks.  By then, you will be starting to fit into regular club play on Monday and/or Thursday evenings.  From there, you might aim to play in tournaments further afield.

And, one of the features of modern day bridge is that it can be played online with and against other players from around New Zealand and the world.
