Military Bridge - December 2022 |
An evening of Military Bridge was held at the club on 14th December 2022 with 26 experienced players partnering 26 students. What a fabulous evening was had by all. Wine and snacks were enjoyed in the break, plus plenty of chocolates during the play and prizes were eventually won. We played teams and were oversubscribed for this very popular annual event. Thank you to all the players and thank you to all for helping to encourage our newer players to integrate.

Chernobyl Children’s Project (UK - Solihull) |
For the past 19 years the charity, Chernobyl Children’s Project (UK), has provided a four week recuperative holiday in Solihull for children from Belarus, whose lives are affected by the Chernobyl disaster over 30 years ago. Each year a different group of children enjoy a wonderful holiday, with many trips and activities. They stay for two weeks with local host families and then two more weeks in residential accommodation.
12 teenagers, age 13-15, are taking part in this year’s holiday, all of whom are in remission from cancer. Most of this summer’s group have endured leukemia and other blood cancers, also Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Neuroblastoma and spinal cancer. Many of the children have had bone marrow transplants and four have also lost a parent. They are accompanied by a doctor and two interpreters.
Kath Ruane, Solihull Co-ordinator, says ‘We have planned four weeks of fun and activities; they always have amazing enthusiasm, a love of life, and enjoy everything we do, and so they return with wonderful memories. It’s amazing to see how much their health benefits from fresh air and healthy, uncontaminated food. Doctors say this boosts the children’s immune system for at least two years, helping them to recover from serious illness. We also see a huge boost to their self-confidence and happiness.’
As part of the activities this year, West Midlands Bridge Club organised a session of Minibridge, which was enjoyed by everyone who took part.
Our Christmas Charity Bridge Drive this year will be in aid of the Chernobyl Children’s Project.

HYLDA TOWNSEND at 100 |
Hylda will be 100 years old on the 7th March. The club will be Honouring this occasion. However if you would like to send individual congratulations to Hylda her address is:
Solihull Health Trust Heron Ward. Swallows Meadow Court. Shirley. Solihull B90 4PH
Message from the English Bridge Union:
We are delighted to wish a Happy 100th Birthday to our Vice President, Hylda Townsend who was born on 7th March 1913. She is a doyenne of bridge, the game she has played almost all her life.
As well as being a keen player, Hylda is a committed and capable bridge administrator. At national level, she has been an EBU Vice President and a member of the EBU Tournament Committee, and was the recipient of a Dimmie Fleming award.
Hylda is actively involved in the local bridge club scene. A founder member and one time president (1979-1981) of Moseley Bridge Club, her name is engraved on the Hulston Townsend Cup, donated in 2004 to celebrate thirty years since she first won the Club Pairs. Hylda was also instrumental in helping the North Birmingham Bridge Club to acquire its premises. Although she never served on the West Midlands Bridge Club Committee, Hylda was involved in many aspects of its management. Well into her nineties, she continued to run an assisted play session, from which a number of enthusiastic players have emerged.
Hylda is also involved at county level, having been a former Chairman and Shareholder of Warwickshire CBA, where she was made a Life Member in 2009.
Happy 100th Birthday Hylda!
