Westcotes Charity Evening, Monday 4-Nov 2013

Thanks to good support (10 tables), £165 was raised on the night.
This was rounded up from club funds, and a cheque for £200 has been
sent to LOROS.

Winners of the Aggregate Prizes were John Myles & Dennis Davis (NS), John Brett & Max Green (EW); well done to them!

Duplicate scoring
was also completed as normal, but Charity Night doesn't count towards the Consistency Competition.

Thanks to everyone, and special thanks to Ray, who speeded us through 24 boards by 9:45 to leave time for the raffle at the end, Pam Thorne who organised the raffle aided by Tricia Wollen, and Dave McLoughlin for his help with the draw.

Westcotes LCBA League Teams ... Half-term Report
Both teams have had a good first half to the 2012-13 season, and earned their Christmas and New Year break!

Unfortunately, both lost narrowly (5-7) in their final match of the half in matches that they would have been backed to win.

Nevertheless, the A Team remains equal top of a fairly close Division 2,
whilst the B Team is comfortably above 50%, and lying 4th of 8 in Division 4.

(see Results and Calendar on the Home Page and A / B Team League Information from the main menu for more details).

Westcotes Teams 2012-13
For the 2012-13 season, we have two teams in the LCBA League, in Divisions 2 and 4.

The B team is a new venture in recent years, although we had several teams last century.

We wish them, and captain George Pohl, the best of luck for their first season, and are confident that they will enjoy the experience.

New recruits to the teams are always welcome. If you are interested in playing, please speak to George Pohl or John Thompson.

EBU Trial Simultaneous Pairs
We are holding an EBU Simultaneous Pairs heat Monday 27-Feb at Groby Village Hall.

As a normal clubnight, except that the boards will be pre-dealt and the hands will be published afterwards. Scored as usual for Westcotes local results, and also match-pointed across the whole field to give results showing how you did compared to thousands of other pairs nationally. This simultaneous scoring may take a few days.

This is actually a trial event for a new EBU system (the 2nd such trial, and the first one ran smoothly on a Tuesday in December). No extra charge, only the benefit of simultaneous scoring.

To clarify, it's not a charity event.

CIN Simultaneous Results 14-Nov

Westcotes Local Results are shown as usual, but also including contracts and hands. Click on 14th Nov 2011 in the Results column to your right.

Overall results, scored against the entire simultaneous field, are on
this link to ECats Bridge

Each club loads it's results when ready, so the picture will change marginally until all clubs are loaded (and possibly corrected) until the combined simultaneous results are declared final.

NB CIN Sims on other nights of the same week play a different set of boards each night, so each night is an entirely separate competition.

CIN Simultaneous Pairs at Groby Village Hall on 14-Nov
Monday 14-Nov - Children in Need Simultaneous Pairs at Groby Village Hall.

Table-money for this special event was £3 each, your contribution all going to the Children in Need charity.

There were 8½ tables, raising £102 for Children in Need; many thanks to all.

Organised just like a normal clubnight, and scored as usual for Westcotes local results. However, the same hands were also played at many venues nationally and match-pointed across the whole field to give results showing how you did compared to thousands of other pairs. This combined (simultaneous) scoring may take a few days to complete.

Successful First Night at Groby
Our first evening at Groby on 5-Sep went well.

Apart from many of our regulars, we had 3 new players and a few invited guests, making 11 tables altogether. The bridge was washed down with a glass of wine (sometimes two!), and the kitchen proved popular for tea and coffee.

It was a little crowded, and (as was to be expected), marginally disorganised, as people found out where things were. However, everyone seemed to enjoy the evening, and Ray ensured that the bridge movement proceeded in an orderly fashion.

The room will be very comfortable for our expected normal attendance of about 8 or 9 tables, when we will have less furniture moving to do.

Thanks to all who attended, and commiserations to those who couldn't come due to holidays etc.

OPENING NIGHT at Groby - Monday 5th September
Arrangements are in hand for marking the occasion of our first evening at Groby Village Hall on Monday 5th September.

Don't worry, it will still be duplicate bridge as usual, no cabaret or anything spectacular.

However, there will be a glass of wine to celebrate, and we are inviting a handful of guests from Groby and from the Leicestershire bridge community.

The move to Groby was announced in the local monthly magazine, the Groby and Field Head Spotlight on 13-Aug, and 4 keen local residents with some bridge experience will be playing on 5-Sep with a view to joining the club. Please give them a warm welcome.

We can now confirm that it's expected to be a full house!

(Incidentally, this first evening will not count towards the consistency competition).

Directions & Maps for our new venue at Groby (from 5-Sep)
The address: Groby Village Hall, Leicester Road, Groby, Leicester LE6 0DJ      Click here for Map (A marks the spot)

More about Groby and the Village Hall can be found by clicking on this link
. We should be on the Clubs & Societies Page shortly.

From Leicester or Glenfield: take the A50 out-bound from the County Hall roundabout. At the next (A50/A46) roundabout, take the first exit, Leicester Road, sign-posted Groby (Do not continue on the out-bound A50, as there is no further turn-off into Groby).

Leicester Road (the "old" A50 before the bypass was built) crosses over the A46 and drops down to a small roundabout. Take the 2nd exit (still Leicester Road), and continue for just over half a mile, with a small roundabout about half-way along this stretch.

As you approach the top of the hill, the dual carriageway comes to an end, and the Village Hall is about 100 yards on the right.

On the return journey, either retrace this route to the A50/A46 roundabout, or exit via Newtown Linford Lane to the A50 in-bound.

From Kirby Muxloe: it's more direct to go via Ratby. Straight through, leaving Ratby on Groby Road. About 300 yards after crossing over the M1, take the next left (also Groby Road, soon changing to Ratby Road), which leads to a T-junction at the village centre (Stamford Arms). Turn right into Markfield Road , and the Village Hall is about 200 yards on the left, just after Newton Linford Lane.

From Miscellaneous locations via the A46 (including from M1 Junction 21): to the A46/A50 Roundabout, then as from Leicester.

From Markfield or the A50 further out than Groby (including from M1 Junction 22): Exit the A50 at Groby, and go straight into Groby via Newtown Linford Lane, returning later via Markfield Road to rejoin the A50 out-bound.

New Westcotes Venue Booked from 5-Sep
There has been (and still is) some uncertainty about how long the County Hall Social & Sports Club will remain open.

However, to ensure that we have a home to go to, our new venue at the Groby Village Hall has now been booked with effect from 5th September, the first Monday after the Summer Bank Holiday.

The hall is about 1.4 miles from the "Glenfield Turn" aka County Hall roundabout. More information will be posted to this website soon, and will be available in print at clubnights in August.

Bridge will continue on Monday evenings at County Hall until 22nd August

It is unfortunate that the club has to move, but the new venue is very suitable for us, having ample parking, bright lighting, good toilets, kitchen facilities, and is all at ground-floor level with disabled access.

Your club needs your continuing support to maintain the number of tables both for the remaining 5 Mondays at County Hall, and after we move to Groby Village Hall on Monday 5-Sep.

Interim Venue Update 2
(See also previous updates below)

The  new Sports Pavilion  at County Hall is unsuitable for us, and we are now proceeding with an application for the room at Groby Village Hall. We currently expect to move there from 5-Sep, but may need to bring that forward depending on when the Social and Sports Club will cease to be available to us.

There is a meeting of the Social and Sports Club Committee on Thursday evening 16-Jun, which will probably confirm how long we can continue at County Hall, after which we will confirm our booking at Groby.

Interim Venue Update 1
The Social and Sports Club may remain open for a few weeks longer than first thought, possibly until the end of August. If so we will probably continue to meet there until Monday 22-Aug.

There is a strong chance that we will move to Groby Village Hall (from August or September depending on the above).

However, there is a small chance that we remain at County Hall and move to the new Sports Pavilion. We are investigating that possibility, but it may not be available or suitable. A decision will be made before the end of June, and we will keep members informed via this News page (and announcements on clubnight).

Westcotes Bridge Club Need to Find a New Venue Shortly
As many of you know, our venue at the LCC Social & Sports Club is likely to become unavailable about the end of July 2011.

A special meeting of Social & Sports Club members is to be held in July to consider a proposal to disband the  Social & Sports Club due to reduced support from the County Council.

We have, therefore been given formal notice of the termination of our arrangement with the Social & Sports Club, together with confirmation that we are welcome to continue to use the club room as long as it remains available (anticipated end of July).

Hence, the WBC committee is urgently seeking a replacement venue, with the effort being coordinated by David McLoughlin.

The committee initially agreed that we should initially look only reasonably close to our current venue, possibly including premises nearer to the club's "roots" in the Westcotes area.

Members attending on Mon 16-May were asked for their preferences of whether we should aim to stay out in the suburbs or move back into the city, and a possible venue in each case was used as an example of the possible location. It was evident from a show of hands that a clear majority would prefer to stay out of town in the vicinity of Glenfield / Groby.

More information will be posted here as it becomes available. Members should not be concerned; it is anticipated that a suitable venue will be found in plenty of time.

In the meantime, bridge will continue at County Hall as normal until at least mid-July.

County Bridge Club 50th Anniversary Simultaneous Pairs
The County Bridge Club will be 50 years old this year

To celebrate, they're organising a Simultaneous Pairs, and Westcotes will run a heat on Monday 6-Jun 2011 at County Hall

Westcotes results will be match-pointed as usual by comparison of the scores on each board in our heat only.

Then the board-by-board scores will also be sent electronically to ECats, who will match-point them again by comparison of the scores on each board across all 8 heats to arrive at an overall ranking list. This will be available to view on-line, and I will endeavour to put a link on this site.

Table-money will be £1.50 for members (as usual), £1 of which will go to the County Club. Approximately 15p of that will be paid to ECats for their scoring services, with the other 85p going into the prize pool. This will enable generous prizes to be paid to the top 9 pairs in the overall ranking list. The County Club will not retain any of the entry fees.

Visitors will be welcome, and some of our neighbours from the Glenfield Bridge Club might like to attend. Glenfield will not be running a heat, as the event takes place at all participating clubs on the same night (Monday 6-Jun). For this special event, visitors will pay the same £1.50 table-money as members.

Changes to the Consistency Competition for 2011-12
The Consistency Table was previously maintained in a spreadsheet, requiring separate entry of duplicate results and other information, which was labour intensive and a potential source of error.

From 2011-12 (started 4-Apr 2011) we are using this BridgeWebs site to automatically update the table from the results of each session. This saves effort, but will lose some (secondary) functionality.

The table still shows the average % score for pairs currently on course to play at least 20 times in the year, but may omit those who have so far played less frequently.

This "deficiency" is partly overcome by varying parameters during the year.

Cumulative results for the calendar year can also be accessed via the "Event Results etc" page.

We expect to post information on the notice-board for members who don't use the internet.
