Minutes of the Meeting of West Bridgford Bridge Cub
held on Monday 13th January 2014
Present: Tim Anderson (chair), Shiona Dawson, Ian Dovey, Clive Goode,
David Hazeldine, Val Savidge
1. Christmas Party
Thanks to all who attended the Christmas Party and making it a successful evening. Special thanks to Val Savidge for providing the food, Shiona Dawson for the drinks and Ian Dovey for the quiz. The format of next years party will be reviewed and we hope to be able to provide more spot prizes. It may have been a mistake to hold a normal though shortened Pairs since it made the evening less distinctive and reduced the opportunity for prizes. Tim reported that manual scoring was time-consuming and error-prone so a computer should be used. Action: None immediate
The following dates are agreed for club competitions:
January 27th – Pro-Am Pairs
February 12th – Ladies v Gents (at Bradmore). A sign-up form will be provided ASAP.
March 24th – Aggregate Competition
The club AGM will take place on Monday 28th April (followed by duplicate bridge as normal). David Hazeldine is willing to continue as Treasurer. There is room for new committee members. If you are interested please contact any member of the committee.
4. Directors and hosting
John Barker will come off the rota once his current commitments are completed. It would be good to find more people willing to direct and ideas or volunteers are welcome. There is an EBU training course, which consists of three sessions and an assessment, and the club will contribute 50% of the cost to members approved by the committee to go on the course. That said, completion of the course is not a requirement, as there are always experienced directors present who can be consulted.
Tim described a hosting system at another club where directors act as host and run the event as non-playing directors if no host is required. It was felt that this would be impractical at West Bridgford especially for those who come a considerable distance.
David Hazeldine is willing to act as a central point for partner contacts. So if you need a partner please contact David and he will try and sort one out for you. However he will be away for some weeks. Action: DH
6. Bradmore Bookings
Bradmore needs to be booked for the Easter and May Bank Holidays (April 28th, May 5th, May 26th). Action: DH
7. Playing Cards
Two dozen packs of new cards are required. Action: DH
8. Web site
There was discussion of whether we should use the membership feature of the Bridgewebs site, and how to set up competitions such as master points, other events. Ian/Tim to look at this as time allows. Action: ID, TA
9. Training DVD
A reminder that the club has a copy of the Andrew Robson DVD “Play Modern Bridge”. This is available for loan to club members. If you have any any other suggestions for purchases please contact Clive Goode.
5. Date of Next Meeting
Monday 10th March 2014 (last meeting before the AGM)
