Unit Board Meeting

Present: Tom Olsson, Kristin Welter, Carolyn Miller, Nancy Wison, Carolyn Sabroske, Joyce Halverson
Absent: Sally Meixner
President Carolyn Sabroske called meeting to order at 10:04 am
TREASURER’S REPORT: Carolyn Miller presented financial reports and tournament information and will also email all reports
to board members
EDUCATION REPORT: Discussed our Unit needing more people to teach Beginners Bridge. Nancy Wilson has offered to
instruct new teachers. Kristin Welter is considering learning to be a teacher. Each member will try to think of other players
who may be willing to learn to teach Beginners Bridge.
OLD BUSINESS: January Sectional Tournament reported a profit of $640. Regional Tournament over July 4th reported a loss
of $10,500.
Regional Tournament: 242 tables 2023 vs 610 tables in 2019. 162 players with 66 from out of town. Peter the Director
stated he would not accept credit cards for tournament fees, however he did accept them. Several ideas were
discussed for the 2025 Regional tournament:
● Smaller venue
● Checking with other hotels
● We paid for 6000 sq ft at the Sheraton but needed only 4000 sq ft
● Budget was for 350 tables but used 242
● More advertising/promotions
● Evening games? Maybe 1 or 2 nights only

NEW BUSINESS:
● Non-Life Master Sectional 8/25 & 8/26...Maggie Nielsen is handling refreshments..offer to help
● Cornbelt Sectional 9/8 & 9/9
● Annual Meeting is 10/20/23 noon - free lunch and free game. Election of Board Members. Tom Olsson goes off board
but offers to stay on. Sally Meixner will go off the board. Need suggestions for a new board member.
OTHER DISCUSSIONS:
● Tom Olsson will line up mentor games - Oct/Nov - checking with Fridays Supervised Play
● Nancy Wilson mentioned that Val Laing suggested setting up Underwriter Account where bridge members can donate
cash for the benefit of the Unit 216 Board (especially to help Unit 216 recoup the losses from the Regional Tournament
2023)
● Carolyn Sabroske will post a note regarding our financial loss Regional Tournament,
● Discussed several ideas to increase attendance at the club:
Fun games, 8 is enough, draw for partners
Speed games - 5 min
Open house games, special games

● Discussed setting up an email to distribute flyers on tournaments...Deerfield, libraries, HyVee, Senior Centers, etc.
● Tom Olsson is checking updates on our Facebook page
● Next meeting scheduled for 9/25/23 10:30 am
