Enda Glynn - Carlow Congress Champion
Enda Glynn - Carlow Congress Champion

Congratulations to Enda Glynn and former member of the Tribes Bridge Club, Joan Kenny, who pulled off a magnificent, and very rare, 'Treble' at the recent Carlow Congress by winning the full suite of Congress Championships:

Friday: The Mixed Pairs Championship (one session)

Saturday: The Congress Pairs Championship (2 sessions)

Sunday: The Congress Team of Four Championship (2 sessions)

Although they had achieved the 'Double' on three previous occasions this was the first time that they completed the 'Treble' which is a very rare feat at Irish Congresses. Well done to both players.

I visited the 'downstairs' room last Monday hoping to get a photo of Enda and Joan but unfortunately I didn't manage to get a photo of the pair of Carlow Congress Champions!

Tribes Bridge Club Christmas Party, 14th December 2017

The Tribes Bridge Club Christmas Party was held on Thursday, 14th December at the Galway Bridge Centre.

The event, organised by Club President, David Walsh and his committee, attracted approx. 60 members who enjoyed a short game of bridge followed by a buffet meal courtesy of Nicholson Catering. Apres-dinner saw the presentation of prizes for the Christmas Competition followed by a challenging and fun table quiz organsied by the inimitable Michael O'Connor.

I had some problems with my camera that evening and not all of the photos that I took turned out well. Consequently some photos have not been uploaded. The remainder can be viewed at the following link:

We also take this opportunity to wish David Walsh & Enda Glynn, and their team-mates on the CBAI team, the best of luck in the upcoming Camrose Series 2018. The first weekend takes place in Northern Ireland on 5th-7th January 2018.

Ryder Cup & Mulhern Trophy Winners 2017-2018

Congratulations to Rose Higgins & Lil Corless winners of the Ryder Cup. This competition, heretofore the club's Pairs Championship, was re-designated as the club's Intermediate Pairs Championship and was won by members of long-standing, and an almost equally long partnership.

And the Sean Mulhern Perpetual Trophy, re-designated this year as the club's Open Pairs Championship for master grades, was won by founder members Colette Mulhern & May O'Sullivan. Colette was the prime mover in estabishing the Tribes Bridge Club in 1970 and May was also a founder member. Thus, both are celebrating 47 years of continuous membership of the Tribes Bridge Club.

With regard to the Sean Mulhern Perpetual Trophy the following can be noted:

"Upon his death, the President of the Tribe Bridge Club at the time, Mrs. Marie Wrixon, proposed at the Committee Meeting held on 7th September 1977, and the Committee unanimously decided, ‘that a trophy be purchased to perpetuate the memory of the late Dr S Mulhern.’.

At the A.G.M held on the 27th October 1977 Mrs Wrixon (outgoing President) presented a trophy on behalf of the club to the incoming President, Commandant Arthur Hume.

The Minutes of the A.G.M note that ‘The trophy is to commemorate the memory of the late S. Mulhern and is the Dr. Mulhern Perpetual Trophy. It will be competed for annually and the competition will be open to registered members of all Galway City Clubs.’

Commdt. Hume thanked the members for the trophy and said it was fitting that a memorial trophy should be presented on behalf of Dr. Mulhern who devoted so much energy to promoting bridge in the club and otherwise.’

The Trophy was first played for in the 1977-78 season and was won by Mrs M Ryder & Dr. M. Coughlan."

Well done to both pairs.
