Committee Meeting Held 19th March 2012

The Meeting was opened by the Chairman at 5.30 p.m.

In attendance: David Hunt - Chairman, Gina Hunt - Treasurer, Jim Sherman - Secretary, Peter Francis Competition - Secretary  & Susan Poole - Community Centre Representative.

Apologies: Pat Lee - Membership Secretary & Jean Pike - House/Stationery.

1. David welcomed everyone to the meeting. He thanked the Committee for their efforts in helping to maintain such a successful club during his and Gina’s time on holiday.

2. Minutes of the last Committee Meeting held 14th November 2011 and AGM held 12th December 2011.

Both minutes were accepted unanimously.

3. Matters Arising.

There were no matters arising.

4. Treasurer’s Report.

Gina was pleased to report that a good uptake of membership at the start of 2012 has given an extra boost to our finances.

The rent of the Club Room has increased, as have the EBU P2P fees (up to 33p) with the HIWCBA fee remaining unchanged. She has estimated our costs to the end of June and is happy with the state of our finances which she sees continuing throughout the year and can see no reason to change our current subscription.

The deposit account stands at £1849.48 and the current account at £980.04.

5. Membership Secretary’s Report.

In Pat’s absence her report was read by the Secretary.

She reported that we ended 2011 with 80 members. Three of those members have not rejoined the Club (Joy Girard, Tony Olech & Jo Richards). However we do have three new members (Jim Elvy, Veronica Hunter & Jean Ruskin).

Thus at the start of 2012 the membership remains at 80.

6. Secretary’s Report.

Jim reported the EBU National Grading Scheme is now up and running and you can look up your own grade, grade history and partnership performance along with the grades of other members.

From April 2012 the EBU is taking the running of its Sim Pairs events in house and their latest Simultaneous Pairs Calendar has been published. Entry fee has been set at £2.50.

7. Competition Secretary’s Report.

Peter said our Monday sessions have been running at 11–12 tables and our Wednesday sessions have increased to 9–10 tables.

The directing has been going well however it is difficult to obtain commitments so that a rota can be arranged in advance.

The trial EBU Simultaneous Pairs went well and ran as planned. All future results will be posted on the EBU website together with a Commentary on the hands. No booklets will be issued unless we pay for them (£8 for 20).Our first Sim Pairs under the new system will be held on Wednesday 9th May.(The Committee decided not to purchase booklets).

8. Community Centre Representative’s Report.

Susan reported on the current activities of the Community Centre Committee. Their meetings take place on Mondays and as she plays bridge that night she does not attend many meetings.

Fund raising is a major concern for the Community Centre; however the attitude of the current Manager towards certain members of our Bridge Club on a number of occasions has choked off any meaningful cooperation.

9. Any Other Business.

a) The first Monday in May is the 7th a Bank Holiday and this was not allowed for in the Club’s Calendar. After some discussion it was decided that the Monday Cup would be played as normal on the first available Monday of the month namely 14th May and the Teams Competition would be delayed a week until the 21st May.

b) The Competition Secretary reported on a number of incidents that had taken place during play at the Club, this had led in one case to an e-mail being sent to him.

Discussion took place and it was decided that the Chairman would speak to the individuals concerned. Additionally he would draw members’ attention to our Best Behaviour policy shown on the website where it states that “Bridge is an extremely enjoyable game and that courteous behavior is an exceptionally important part of that enjoyment”.

c) The summer party was discussed; it will be organised by Gina, Susan, Jean and other volunteers. It will take place on Monday 18th June 2012.

Meeting closed at 6.40 p.m.

Date of next meeting Monday 23rd July 2012 at 5.30 pm at the Titchfield Community Centre.
