Templeogue Castle Community Bridge Centre (TCCBC) Newsletter

The Centre’s Newly Appointed Information Officer:

       Marian Mc Guinness Logue.

An Introduction:

The commemorative plaque at the entrance to the hall, says it all !

‘The Bridge Centre was built in 1999, thanks to the generosity of the local bridge players, and the vision, commitment and dedication of its three founding Trustees,

Joe Moran, Briain Healy, and Martin Keane’

Previously, there were many individual bridge clubs in this area, playing in some very unsuitable venues, like school classrooms and parish halls. The Founding Members understood that what was needed for the clubs was to have ‘A home of our own’ This became their motto. They approached every bridge club in the area to secure the backing they needed in their quest for the acquisition of a bridge centre. They worked tirelessly and eventually the site beside Templeogue House became available.

Our purpose built Centre as we know it today, amid much fanfare, was built and completed in 1999. It is occupied by five clubs, playing five nights a week. Our Centre has a very well equipped, very comfortable Bridge hall. It has a fully stocked kitchen, and a very jolly bar with drinks of every variety, at greatly reduced prices. It boasts an expansive car parking area with security cameras which is also patrolled by a car-park attendant each night. The Centre is run on an entirely voluntary basis.

It is managed by the TCCBC committee, which is made up of Trustees, Officers and two representatives from each of the five clubs.

Trustees and Officers are as follows:

Chairman             Joe Moran         Trustee

Finance:               Kieran Hone      Trustee

Management:    Martin Keane    Trustee

Honorary Secretary:    Mary Barry,    Officer

Honorary Treasurer:     Brenda Moran   Officer

Health and Safety:        Pat Mc Gillion    Officer

TCCBC Competitions:

The Centre organises Morning Bridge from Monday to Thursday. Members and non-members of the Centre are welcome to play. The Centre runs the Marie Moran Pairs Competition and the Inter-Clubs Team of Four. It also hosts competitions on behalf of the national organisations, namely the IBU and the CBAI. These competitions are run at weekends.

The TCCBC also runs classes for Beginner and Improvers in all categories. These classes take place in the Teaching Room.

Our five Clubs play at 7.30pm on the following evenings:

Monday       Knocklyon Bridge Club-                 www.bridgewebs.com/knocklyon

Tuesday      Ballyroan Bridge Club-                   www.bridgewebs.com/ballyroan

Wednesday St.Jude’s Bridge Club-                   www.bridgewebs.com/stjudes

Thursday     Cypress Bridge Club-                     www.bridgewebs.com/cypress

Friday          Templeogue College Bridge Club  www.bridgewebs.com/templeoguecollege

Joining the Centre currently costs €275 for ordinary members. Yearly membership costs €40 but increases to 50 if not paid by 20th June. A member of the Centre must also be a member of at least one of the five Bridge clubs in the centre. One cannot be a member of a club in the Centre without being a member of the Centre itself.

Membership subscriptions for the clubs are due in September and currently cost €15. The Centre supplies a calendar for each member with dates of competitions and events and the committee names and their contact numbers in all clubs, as well as events in the Centre itself.

All five clubs welcome new members and most have a ‘Joker’ system. This allows an individual member without a partner to come and be assured of a game.

The clubs conduct their own affairs independently of each other and have total autonomy in their own bridge club. Each club has a website where one can find information about the workings of the club, the committee members, competitions and results, news and details of events which are organised by the club, as well as photographs of prize-giving and all social events.

The Marie Moran Trophy:

This pairs competition is named in honour of Marie Moran, Joe’s late wife, who played a significant and very enthusiastic role in the early days. It is held on the first Saturday of  November each year. It is the Centre’s Pairs Competition. It is a very enjoyable day, with two sessions, beginning at 12 noon, and ending around 7pm. Refreshments are served at the break and food is served with wine in the evening.  Great fun continues in the bar afterwards with music, singing and dancing. It is open to all members of the Centre from all five clubs. This is an event not to be missed.

The bar is also open.

In line with government guidelines masks are no longer mandatory, although members may still choose to wear them.

For the safety of all, please do not come to the centre if you are not fully vaccinated or are experiencing any symptoms of Covid, flu or cold.

MORNING BRIDGE

We are delighted to announce that morning bridge has resumed live in the bridge centre and will be run as usual Monday to Thursday at 10.00.

In line with government guidelines masks are no longer mandatory although players may still choose to wear them.

For the safety of all, please do not come to the centre if you are not fully vaccinated or are experiencing any symptoms of Covid, flu or cold.

Members and non-members of the centre can play morning bridge.

VENTILATION IN THE BRIDGE CENTRE

The Air Handling Unit installed in the main room is designed, in accordance with the CIBSE regulations, to supply fresh air for a maximum of 275 people in the room. CO2 monitors already installed are an additional benefit for monitoring the air quality. This plant is supplied by Thermodial and is serviced and tested quarterly each year. In addition to this an air purification enhancement system was installed in the room in October 2021. This is designed to further prevent the spread of viruses, including the virus that causes Covid19.

Virtual Club bridge-playing possibilities

Some clubs will still run online bridge on BBO as well as running live in the centre.

Please check your club's website for further information on this.

All about us

The Bridge Centre is a purpose-built complex located on Templeogue Road, opposite Cheeverstown House.

Set up in 1999 the Centre provides a fully equipped facility used exclusively for playing Bridge.

The Centre is home to five different Evening Bridge clubs, confined to members of the Bridge Centre and is run by a different club each weeknight. (A visitor may play up to four times provided that they are signed in by a member of the Centre.)

Please note that evening Bridge starts at 7:30pm and that all players are asked to be seated at their table by 7:20pm so that play can start on time.

Casual Morning Bridge is organised by the Bridge Centre on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week and play starts at 10:00am.

Please note, however, that Morning Bridge does not take place on Bank Holidays.

Morning Bridge is open to all Bridge players, and both members and non members of the Bridge Centre are welcome. You can come without a partner.

On some weekends  Regional or National competitions are run in the Centre.

The Centre also runs its own Inter-Club Team of Four competition and the Marie Moran Pairs competition.

A Poem for The Christmas Party for Tuesday Morning Bridge

                                   BRIDGE AT TEMPLEOGUE

                                  Tuesday bridge at Templeogue:

A weekly treat for one and all.

With  Ann and scary Valerie in charge,

There's good behaviour in the hall.

My partner Peter is a gem,

                                  A novice with a master's flair.

                                  He bids with cheery confidence

                                  And manufactures tricks from air.

What better way to spend our time,

With doubles, slams and winter fun.

So cherish partners, play the game

                                  And happy Christmas everyone.

                                  John Fanagan                                       12 December 2017

Marie Moran 2023
Thank You Evelyn
Thank You Evelyn

Evelyn Sharkey recently decided to retire from Wednesday Morning Bridge. She will be very much missed, and on the occasion of her retirement, Joe Moran presented her with a bouquet to thank her for her marvellous commitment to morning bridge from the start, and wished her well  for the future.

Thanks Mary!

Mary Pierce who has helped out immensely over the years in organising morning bridge is retiring. We would like to thank Mary for all her help over the years and wish her all the best for the future.
