BridgeclubLive |
A long established UK based site which the club has used extensively during lockdown and still does. It is based on a membership fee, not pay per use, and Social only membership is very reasonably priced. The club uses the site for its online Pairs League. It has pleasant graphics and the results are available the next working day once all players from wherever have played the hands for comparison. You cannot play on your own and it has no robots or solitaire facility. There has been the recent additonal option of audio and video though the latter has not been tested by this club.

Bridgebase online |
The biggest international OnLine Bridge platform, based in the USA. Joining is free and you can play for free against friends or other players from around the world. There is also an excellent facility to test your card play at any level of experience you like. Organising small team matches are also free. It is the dominant site for international online matches. It is a site used by many UK clubs for online duplicate during lockdown but to do that can be relatively expensive. The graphics are not as good as some sites and to play free means accepting adverts.
You can play instant tournaments yourself against robots at relatively low cost but the Robots use a modernised American bidding convention called 2/1. They do not use Acol though there are forums for matches against players who do.

Other suggestions |
For a good overview of ACOL and associated higher level conventions https://mjbridge.info is a comprehensive and clearly written site. Another site more suited to a huge number of esoteric conventions is https://www.bridgebum.com. Also try http://bidandmade.com for some tips not just on bidding but playing. Finally https://www.andrewrobson.co.uk/andrew/tips_for_intermediates/ is an excellent site with a number of subject headings explaining tricky bidding and plays authored by perhaps the UK's best player.
