Tip 5 |
What do you respond with this hand when partner opens 1♦?
♠ K Q 9 5 4
♥ A Q J 6 3
♦ 10
♣ 8 2
If we had two four card suits it would be better to bid them upwards at the 1-level to maximise the chance of finding a 4-4 fit in a major. But with two five card suits, we intend to bid them both whatever partner rebids. The auction will develop more naturally if we respond 1♠. Then, over 2♦, say, we can bid 2♥showing at least 5-4 in spades and hearts. There may be a chance now, over 2NT for example, to bid 3♥ showing 5-5 and a game going hand, leaving opener to decide the final contract.
Tip from Andrew Robson – think ‘high fives’.
