Suffolk Contract Bridge Association
SUFFOLK’S BIGGEST EVENT?

With 144 players, Café Bridge in Bury St Edmunds on Thursday attracted one of the biggest entries ever for a bridge event staged in Suffolk.

The popular format involved the 72 pairs playing eight three-board rounds in a selection of a dozen cafés and restaurants in the town centre, with scoring done via an a mobile phone app - and lunch taken at half time.

Café Bridge started in this country in south west London and made its debut in Bury St Edmunds only 12 months ago, organised brilliantly by Derek Brinkley.

And the winners were Dorothy and Alaric Cundy, photographed below with their prizes presented by Victor Lesk (left), the brains behind the Café Bridge concept.

On line bridge

Online bridge is:-

  • Free (unless you chose to play in one of the tournaments with entry fees).
  • Convenient - play in the comfort of your own home; no travelling.
  • Quick - no physical table movements, no sorting, counting of cards or waiting for boards, so a 24 board game is normally completed in about two and a half hours.

It’s also impossible to make an insufficient bid, or to play or bid out of turn.  There are online hand records, with the 'play it again' feature.

To play online, you’ll need:-

  • Internet access via a desktop PC, laptop, tablet or even a smartphone
  • The BridgeBaseOnline (BBO) app (free)
  • A BBO username (also free)

Downloading the app and generating the username are quite straightforward, but if you have any problems Peter (pr_bushby@hotmail.com) is happy to help.

The three games planned are on the following dates:-

  • Sunday 29th September
  • Sunday 20th October
  • Sunday 3rd November

Each game will start at 7:00 pm and we will play 24 boards with X-IMP scoring (to simulate teams play), and expect to finish around 9:30.

All players will be invited to join a 'Suffolk Sunday Teams' Facebook Group to discuss interesting hands.  The hands will be taken from past high-level Teams Tournaments so you can compare your results with theirs afterwards.

We hope you will be able to join us.  To do so simply email Peter with your name and BBO username at least five days before the scheduled event.  We prefer entries as Pairs, but if you don’t have a partner just enter as an individual; we will issue a list of unattached players from which you should be able to find a partner.

This is something of an experiment; if it’s successful with favourable feedback from players, we may develop it into a regular event.

If you have any questions, or require further information, please contact Peter Bushby  (pr_bushby@hotmail.com) or Jeff Orton (jeffortonbridge@gmail.com).  Hope to 'see' you online.
