Suffolk Contract Bridge Association
SUFFOLK’S BIGGEST EVENT?

With 144 players, Café Bridge in Bury St Edmunds on Thursday attracted one of the biggest entries ever for a bridge event staged in Suffolk.

The popular format involved the 72 pairs playing eight three-board rounds in a selection of a dozen cafés and restaurants in the town centre, with scoring done via an a mobile phone app - and lunch taken at half time.

Café Bridge started in this country in south west London and made its debut in Bury St Edmunds only 12 months ago, organised brilliantly by Derek Brinkley.

And the winners were Dorothy and Alaric Cundy, photographed below with their prizes presented by Victor Lesk (left), the brains behind the Café Bridge concept.

Cambs&Hunt match

SUFFOLK V CAMBS and HUNTS. 17/10/21.

Captain’s report by Rick Hanley.

This was another excellent day for the B-team, defeating the 3RD placed team in the league table by 16-4 for a 4th straight victory. Helen and David led the way with a great card, but there were solid performances from all the Suffolk pairs. Crucially, Pauline and Con were able to defeat slams on boards 20 and 25, a feat not achieved by one of the A-team pairs! With matches to follow in the new year against bottom of the table Beds and top of the table Herts, there is all to play for.

Both the A and C-Teams fought hard against tough opposition but went down 4-16 and 7-13 respectively. All the C-team pairs were competitive, including debutants Caroline and Mark, and all gave respectable performances in defeat.

Perhaps the most interesting board of the day was 27. In the A-team, CROSS-IMP table-topping C&H pair Fegarty and Hazel had their worst score of the day when they bid aggressively to 4H and went 3 down. May and John, by contrast, played in 1H for +80. Over 1H or 2H, should S bid an unusual 2NT? N/S can actually make 5 clubs or diamonds due to the favourable lie of the cards, but only 2 pairs played in a minor.
