Another Loss

The funeral services for Jim Mustain will be held at at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 13, 2026, at the Daniel Funeral Home. A light luncheon will follow the funeral service. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Jim moved to Minnesota in 1973 and started playing at the bridge club soon after. He continued to play regularly for almost 50 years, playing in his last game in January of 2023. Through the years, he partnered with hundreds of our club members. He amassed just over 3000 master points in his years of play. In his latter years of playing, he often partnered at tournaments with another longtime player, Char Thul. "Discussions" after hands were sometimes interesting to listen to. Jim was a fierce competitor at the table but was a warm and friendly guy away from the table. He would often talk about his experiences as a helicopter pilot in Korea and Vietnam. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, but at the club was given the nickname of “The General.”

His obituary can be found at https://www.danielfuneralhome.com/obit/james-c-jim-mustain/.

In Memorandum

On March 28th, Tom Buttweiler finally succumbed to the tumor he named "Edgar." Tom had surgery almost a year ago to remove a tumor which then biopsied malignant. Surgeons hoped that they had gotten it all and everyday after, Tom treated as a bonus day. Over the summer regular checks showed up clear but in the fall, the cancer came back with a vengeance and Tom knew that his days were limited. He insisted on living his life to the fullest and do things that he enjoyed (and finding enjoyment in things he did). One of those things was bridge. While Tom was a long time regular at the tables, he was even more so these last months. Tom was one of the best storytellers I have ever met, and he continued to regale the people at his table with his storytelling. He hung on at the bridge table as long as he could. It was one of his joys these past months. We will all miss Tom, his booming voice, his stories, and his laughter. His obituary can be found at https://www.williamsdingmann.com/obituaries/Thomas-Herbert-Buttweiler?obId=47969469#/obituaryInfo. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Quiet Oaks Hospice House or The Nature Conservancy.

St Louie Gold!

How many masterpoints can one win at a National? For those of you looking at attending the National in Minneapolis, you have a guiding star from our home club. Dan Knier returned from the St Louis Nationals carrying a heavy load – just a smidge under 57 masterpoints!

Dan attended the Nationals along with the three other members of “The Tall Men’s Team” consisting of Dan, his brother, Tom, John Miller, and Dan McIntyre. They participated and did well in both pair games (4 days and 31 points) and team games (2 days and 26 points). We won’t say who carried who for the week but Dan did end up with more points than anyone else on the team! Be sure to congratulate Dan when you get a chance.

Wish I had a picture of Dan from St Louis but we will have to settle for this older one.

Make your plans for Minneapolis!
