RULES FOR ON LINE BRIDGE COMPETITION

  1. The competition will be completed once all teams have played every other team 'home' and 'away'. The home team being the first named in the fixture list. Fixture list to be created using fixturelist.com (free).
  2. The home team captain will follow the actions laid down in Appendix 1.
  3. Handicaps to be calculated using the EBU recommended scoring for Multiple Teams events. Formula is (Average of all players-Teams average grade value) × 0.3086 × 11
  4. Match results will be converted to Victory Points using the continuous Victory Point scale as per EBU recommended best practice.
  5. Teams shall consist of 4 players, in the case of illness or other circumstances substitutes may be allowed. If the substitutes NGS grade is higher than the player he is replacing the competition organizer will adjust the teams handicap to reflect this, but if the replacement has a lower NGS than the player he is replacing the original handicap will remain unaltered.
  6. If a team withdraws from the competition and have played less than 50% of their matches then all of their match results will be expunged from the records. If the withdrawn team has played 50% or more then future opponents will receive the greater of A) The average of the number of Victory Points it has earned up to the time of the forfeited match or B) The average number of points earned by the teams that played against the defaulted team.
  7. Any disputes to be submitted to the competition organizer for consideration by a panel comprised of the SBC Chairman, Captain & Secretary. Their decision will be final. But see 10. below
  8. The organizer will produce league tables and arrange for them along with the latest set of results to be sent to all participants within 7 days of the fixture being played.
  9. Mis-clicked calls. Can be corrected provided that your partner has not yet called. BCL procedure states that to rectify immediately "Leave table" and straight away return to your seat and explain that you Mis-clicked your call. The players need to click "Ready" again and the auction should re-start as per the original auction up to the point of the mis-clicked call. If partner has already called not only can you not correct your call but also mustn't give unauthorized information by revealing that you had made an error. This rule applies only to mis-clicked calls, if you mis-click whilst playing a card tough luck, this may not be rectified.
  10. Disputes during play of a hand. Create an Interim Incident Report and finalise the report after play has finished. An Interim Incident Report will automatically log up to 30 minutes of the chat, seating and contract history, the names of the players and where they were seated. It takes a matter of seconds to create, just click on the notepad and pencil at the bottom right hand side panel, select Interim Incident Report and then press HERE.

Appendix1

ACTION TO BE TAKEN BY TEAM CAPTAINS

  1. All team captains will nominate an individual to be their 'table starter' for the competition and inform the competition organiser of their choice. The captain should not act as the starter.
  2. Matches to be played Tuesday 2.00pm; Wednesday 10.30pm or Thursday 2.00pm.
  3. The home team captain is responsible for arranging the fixture at a mutually agreeable time with the away team captain. If one of the options in 2 above isn't suitable then the fixture may either be carried over to the next free week or exceptionally played outside the agreed days/times.
  4. At the agreed date and time Log into BCL
  5. Click on Play Bridge
  6. Click on Enter the Bridge Club
  7. Click on Teams of Four
  8. You are now Lurking in the Teams of Four room. From here you can contact both team's members. You should have the aliases for the eight players to hand.
  9. Click on 'Room' and you will be able to find all the players to make up the teams Lurking there. If you can't find them go into "Local Club" as that is probably the easiest place to find out their whereabouts within BCL from, return to To4 room by clicking on 'Rooms'
  10. Once all eight are assembled in the To4 room use the chat box to instruct the nominated member of your team to start a Table. Do not start a table yourself for if you do you will have to communicate with your Lurkers by individual messages..
  11. In "Rooms" view find the table number that your team member has started.
  12. Following your "Start a table" message both teams members should take their seats, remain lurking until certain that everyone is correctly seated.
  13. From here follow the instructions from ACTION TO BE TAKEN BY THE PLAYERS Step 3. (See Appendix 2)
  14. The home team captain should email the competition organiser tm42qz@gmail.com if the match is postponed or played outside the three designated start days/times. The competition organiser will use the results published by BCL for the purposes of creating the league table.
  15. It is advisable for the team captains to have each others phone number so that if there are any problems they have a means of communication other than the Chat box, it would also be advisable to have a phone number for each member of your team.

Introduction

The system will set up TWO tables with a common number - eg table 2A & table 2B. The A table is the base for the home team & B is the base for the away team. The computer will move pairs between the two tables so that you will play a round of 4 hands with each pair from the opposing team. There may be a short delay after the first four hands as you must wait for the other table to finish their round.

Scoring is in Imps

Appendix 2
ACTION TO BE TAKEN BY PLAYERS

  1. Log into BCL and go to the Teams of Four room.
  2. You are now Lurking in the Teams of Four room. Once everyone has arrived the home team captain will send a chat message asking his nominated individual to start a table. Watch out for this message but also keep refreshing the tables and look out for the tables appearing, the nominated individual will be seated North on an A table. If you are in the home team join the A table, the away team join the B table, sitting opposite your partner. Many messages get posted on the Chat box and so any message for you may only be in view for a very short time so don't let your attention wander at this stage. You will be seated with the other members of your team; if you aren't at this stage then you should use the Chat Box to inform the organiser. If you are lurking your chat will go to other lurkers, if you are sitting at a table your message will go to the Table. If you wish to send a message to someone in particular find their profile then click on the blue Chat to link to them, be sure to remember to click the x next to their name below the chat line when you have finished.
  3. Once all players are seated at the tables, North & East will need to submit the 'Simple System Disclosure' (SSD) filling in the appropriate details for the pair's partnership & South and West then have to agree it.
  4. Once all SSD's have been confirmed a message appears in the Chat Box stating that the match can now start and that players should now press 'READY' in the centre of the table. As soon as all eight players have signalled that they are ready players will be moved to play their first opponents
  5. Your teammates will now disappear to the other table and your opponents will arrive to start the game. After four boards the other pair from the opposing team will appear. If the other table are slower at playing their boards you will just have to wait until they finish.
  6. After the eight boards in the team match have been completed the Server will announce "Last board played - This teams table is now finished" .
All players must now leave the table and upon doing so they will now be Lurking in the Teams of Four room. The second set of eight boards will be played at new tables.
  7. The whole process will now be repeated as above from step 2 in order for the second set of eight boards to be played.
  8. After this second set of eight boards have been completed the Server will announce "Last board played - This teams table is now finished" and unlike the Shelley where players return to their teams table to compare their scorecards players should now exit from the Teams of Four room and can either log out of BCL or check the match result - see below
  9. If you get kicked out, momentarily lose internet connection, etc. & you can't get back into your seat at the table then exit from the BCL site and log back in, it is quite likely that the server will remember where you have come from and return you to your seat. If this does not happen return to the Teams of Four room and return yourself to your seat, (when first allocated to a table make a mental note of your table number.)

GETTING YOUR RESULTS

The results system will pick up the two tables and give the teams results, which can be found in the results section called "Teams of Four".

To get to the Teams of Four results section:-

"Leave table"

"Exit"

Back one more step to the Home Page (Play Bridge page)

There are nine black tabs just above "Play bridge" hover over the "Results" tab

A drop down list appears and click on "Personal results"

Click on "Teams of Four"

Check that the results are for 16 boards and not 15, the final board usually takes several minutes to update to the results page.

If you don't check on the results until the following day, or even later, you may still access the results but rather than selecting "Personal Results" click on "Archived Personal" and scroll down to the bottom. Double click on the link and the contracts and scores for the hands played will be displayed.

If you wish to look at a hand in detail double click on the relevant board number and the four hands will be displayed along with the contracts and results for every table that played that board.

I'm told that you can review the auction and the play of the hand as it happened and if you have the correct software available you can see what the optimum contract is. This feature is not available on a MAC.
