Agony Uncle Suggestions
Hands submitted to Robin for his advice
Hand 21 - Played 25th October 2021

A brilliant overcall by West caused North a headache, what should North bid here?  Click "Ans" to see Robin's suggestions but have you another idea?

  1. 3NT, hoping that Partner has a club stop    or  (Better)
  2. Bid 4C, which must be Staymanic (it avoids 3NT), and asks Partner to bid a 4/5 card major, or his best 3 card Major (!!!! she says, but this is possibly correct)   or
  3. Pass, which Partner should bid over if suitable   or
  4. Double, which shows a desire to play in 4 of a Major, or 3NT if that looks suitable.

Double seems the most flexible to me.  If Partner leaves it in, you may be on a bad board (i.e. +500 instead of +600); however, you may also be on top of the situation if Partner hasn't got a club stop (Unlikely), but has a 4 card Major.

Very difficult problem -  that is why you should strive to bid on the West hand, if you hold:
♠  4
  7
  Q J 8 5
♣  K Q 10 9 7 4 2
Especially the case if you are not vulnerable, and they are Vulnerable!
