REGULAR EVENTS

The Friday Book Club updated 7th April 2026

We are continuing to read and enjoy (mostly!) a wide variety of books recommended by the members of the group. It is always good to be challenged by a book, chosen by someone else, that we might never have selected for ourselves.
We have seven members at the moment and a short waiting list. We like to keep a small group as it gives everyone a chance to speak.
The person selecting the book will lead the group in the discussion about the book and the author.
Our book for January 2026  was
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
This was a fascinating book which, to begin with, most of us thought would be a depressing book to read but turned out to be a very interesting, unusual book.
The book for February was
Shy Creatures by Clare Chambers
Another very interesting story about an unusual family and events which change their lives. Enjoyed by all of us.
The book for March was
The Satsuma Complex by Bob Mortimer
A strange book with the kind of humour that not everyone finds amusing. We all had quite a negative response to this book but the discussion clarified quite a lot and helped us to see some aspects of the story which we hadn't all seen.
Our book for April is
The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse
This book is for discussion on 10th April.
The book that has been selected for May is
Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton.

Books read during 2025 included:

Orbital by Samantha Harvey , an unusual Booker Prize winning book set in a space station.
Of Mice and Murder by Sally Smith, a fascinating murder mystery set in 1901, in The Inner Temple -'The heart of London's legal world'.
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, another unusual book, subtitled That Octopus Book.
For December  read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
The books are very varied and some are strange and unusual, but we are all delighted to read books that we wouldn't necessarily select for ourselves.
