Insufficient Bids |
Points to note when a player makes an insufficient bid (IB)
1 – the left-hand opponent can accept the IB. NB – if the LHO makes a bid before the IB has been noted it is deemed to have been automatically accepted.
2 – if the bid is noted and not accepted, the bidder must replace his/her IB with any legal bid other than a double.
3 – if the new bid is either of the same denomination as the IB at the next legal level or it is a comparable bid, no further rectification is required and the bidding auction can continue as normal.
4 – if the new bid fails to meet either of the conditions detailed in 3 above, the partner of the insufficient partner must pass on every occasion until the auction is complete.

NB – as comparable bids come up regularly in the current rules of Bridge, this will be the subject matter for August’s ‘rule of the month’.
