One unfortunate outcome arising from the ongoing postponement of the Club’s AGM, has been the failure to give members the opportunity to properly show their appreciation of the efforts of two popular committee members who, after many years of dedicated service, have decided to stand down and give someone else a chance. This gave the rest of the committee a problem, particularly as the ever changing Covid-19 guidelines give no indication as to when this might be possible. The answer was to make a surprise, but socially distanced of course, visit to the homes of them both. On Tuesday 6th October, some committee members braved the showers to visit both Thelma Stephens (retiring Treasurer) and Tom Richardson (former Treasurer of South Mansfield, prior to amalgamation, and long serving committee man).
As our photographs show, Thelma, who has now handed over her ‘bean counting’ responsibilities to Craig Wagstaff, was presented with a planter in recognition of her sterling work and participation in playing what she has always maintained is ‘just a game, but a lot of fun with a wonderful group of friends’.
As for Tom. It is well known that there are four great delights in his life and these are Jean (& the family), bridge, golf and organising Christmas parties. We’ve never been quite sure in what order these should be listed!!
Whatever, in a brief sunny interlude at their back door in Ravenshead, Tom was presented with an entertaining book on golf and a large bar of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Chocolate, quite possibly the fifth greatest love of his life. Some of us have known Tom for many years and regard him as a true friend but recognising that Jean has had to ‘put up with him’ – willingly we’re sure!! – for now well over sixty years, she also was presented with a planter.(Spot the one amongst the fine display on their patio!)
All three appeared to be happy with the visit, and a lthough not able to personally thank all Club members for the surprise gifts, they hope to be able to do so once we’re given the ‘all clear’ and allowed to meet up as friends, once again, around the bridge table.
