Club History

In 1985 a group of ten or 12 people met for social bridge in a small upper room in the village hall Shavington.

It was led by Molly Robinson who taught beginners as most of the group were at that time.

Since there was a big increase in the popularity of Bridge at the time,  perhaps prompted by Television coverage of the game, other players were encourage to join, and the club became a feeder for the more established Bridge Clubs in the area.

The Shavington numbers increased quickly as the pleasure of playing in a mildly competitive spirit appealed to more and more players, the group then needed to move to bigger room but not for long, in 1988  the club started playing in the main hall where we have played ever since.

Such was the demand that the membership had to be capped at 100 and the club created its first constitution.

At that time the game was Rubber Bridge and the end of a rubber an arm was raised to signal the finish.

The direction of the games moved to Chicago Bridge which was alternated with Rubber Bridge weekly but eventually to Chicago every week.

The Club ran an “Introduction to Duplicate Bridge” which had players with reservations but Duplicate quickly became the Club game. This then meant that Duplicate players from other local clubs came to play at Shavington meaning that the skill levels were raised at the events.

Another Character worthy of special mention is Margaret Price. In the early 2000’s Margaret organized, marked and did everything, she wouldn’t even allow players to pass the boards along, and when the time was up she had a little hand bell which she rang. She directed all the time.

In 2017 facing suspension from the Village Hall, due to its refurbishment of at least six weeks, the club moved to the Brittles for a trial period.

This was so popular that at the 2017 AGM the move was made perminant, so ending a 31 year association with Shavington Village Hall.

From spring 2020 until summer 2021 all face to face bridge was suspended due to Covid 19

The club returns to Shavington Village Hall Summer 2021
