 The Hugh Kelsey Cup 2022
A Fun National Simultaneous Pairs for Newcomers to Bridge.
To be played during the week Fri 25- Thu 31 March.
All participants must be bona fide Learners, attending Classes for Beginners or Improvers, not regular Club players! Different Classes may combine to form a heat. Teachers are asked to indicate players who are genuine Novices who have been learning for two years or less. Players playing in Gentle Pairs on Thursdays are eligible providing they did not play in the competition last year.
Entrants should be completing one of the following this year:
- SBU 20 lesson course
- SBU 60 lesson course (first 40 lessons)
- EBU course end of 2nd year (only if learning in a Scottish class)
The Competition will be played in club heats on either BBO or Real Bridge or Shark, or face to face, whichever the players are used to.
If the numbers being taught are too small to run a heat, we can arrange for you to join with another group. Heats should have at least 2 complete tables of eligible students
Competitors will play at least 12 boards and no more than 16.
Tutors should ensure they have suitably qualified directors whether on BBO or Real Bridge who can upload xml files and send to the scorer. Note that BBO directors must be registered to direct with the SBU.
The Director will upload the boards to either BBO or RealBridge or Shark or prepare the boards for face to face in advance.
Winners will receive individual trophies to keep and the national trophy for 1 year if it can be presented. Players in Scottish classes but living out with Scotland are eligible for individual trophies but not the Hugh Kelsey Cup which must stay within Scotland
The Trophy honours the memory of Hugh Kelsey, a Scotsman who achieved world-wide recognition as one of the greatest ever bridge authors. He wrote and co-authored over 50 books about the game; he was a respected contributor to Bridge magazines, and for many years Bridge Correspondent of ‘The Scotsman’ newspaper. Most of his books are aimed at the expert player, but his love for the game shines through all his work.
