Larry Hayslip
Larry Hayslip

Larry Hayslip is from Georgia, having grown up in Albany and Valdosta. He began to play duplicate bridge as a junior at Valdosta State University. He won his share of sectional tournaments and played in regionals and nationals as well. Today, he notes he has approximately 5600 masterpoints and a number of regional wins. Regrettably, he says he can only dream about winning a national tournament. He notes wryly, he once won the women pairs at the Tallahassee Sectional in the late ‘70’s and they wouldn’t award him the trophy. Once he won an event and won a 50 bag of Vidalia onions (which he gave subsequently away!). Larry has an undergraduate from Valdosta and Master’s degree in math from Georgia Southwestern University in Americus, and has accrued enough credits for an accounting degree if ever necessary. He taught high school math, coached for 11 years and was a government auditor for 23 years. A hobby of reading bridge books (23 shelves full of bridge books, he says), plus about 1000 bridge magazines (he’s read them all) more than qualifies him for teaching lessons at our club this fall. His late wife Peggy owned The Atlanta Duplicate Bridge Club for five years while they lived in Atlanta. His lessons include doubles (takeout, competitive and negative), rebids and reverses. His philosophy is he will always tell students the way or ways the experts do something or advise people to do something. He himself does not necessarily follow the rules (he claims he gets bored easily!). He finds the silly mistakes people make (he includes himself) humorous and will not tolerate when people take advantage of the rules.
