Hand of the Week |
Show Detail |
Here's a hand from the NWP deal for 21 November last, played by us on 19th.
Assuming a 2NT opener and alerted 3♦ to transfer to 3♥, followed by 3♠... what contract would you reach?
Does it matter whether which suit you play in, or perhaps NT?
After you work though this, please leave a comment to let us know what you think of this activity 😁
|
Show Answer |
This is a hand to dream about. Double dummy says you can make a lowley 5♣, a happy 6♦ or a lofty 7♥, 7♠ or stratospheric 7NT. What do you go for?
In our club it was played once each in 6♥ And 6♠, and 3 times 6NT.
How much difference does the suit (or NT) make? 6♥/♠ making 13 tricks scores 1460, and 6NT makes 1470. Not much difference? In match point scoring, the major suit contracts got just 1 of the 8 available match points (12.5%), while the 6NT contracts took 6 (75%).
In NWP it was played 29 times for game (!), 24 times in 6♥/♠, 49 times 6NT and 16 times for all 13 tricks.
In NWP, the one pair in 7NTX making 13 tricks was awarded the maximum of 236 MPs. Those making 13 tricks in 6NT were awarded 161 MPs (68%) while those in 6♥/♠ making 13 were awarded 143 MPs (61%).
And those who stopped in game contracts? Less than 50 MPs (22%).
Go figure 😟
