Saddleworth vs Oakfield
Saddleworth vs Oakfield

Saddleworth Bridge Club played their first inter-club match on Thursday 18th June 2015. The opponents were Oakfield Bridge Club so both sides were able to play on familiar territory at the Masonic Hall as they are both based there. It was a friendly but competitive match with 16 players on each side which was neck and neck until the very end when Saddleworth just managed to get the win. Tea, coffee and cakes were provided at half-time to keep everyone going and a winners cup was awarded to Don Walton, the Saddleworth captain at the end. Everyone agreed it was an enjoyable evening and we hope to arrange a return match. Big thanks to Bob Mercer from Oakfield for sorting out the movement and the scoring and even baking some of the cakes!

Saddleworth vs Ashton

Our second ever inter-club match took place on Wednesday 10th Feb 2016 against Ashton Bridge Club at their club. There were 5 teams of 4 from each club although we did have to borrow one of their players (their president!) due to a last minute problem with one of our players. Ashton won by a huge margin (over 120 imps if I remember rightly) but everyone enjoyed the evening and a supper of potato pie or curry was provided. A trophy was presented to Ashton and we hope to win it back some time. A big thank you to all the participants and our chief organisers Andrea and Dave.

Saddleworth vs Ashton 2

Our second match against Ashton took place on Wednesday 15th Feb 2017 at their club. There were only 4 teams of 4 from each club this time as some members were not available and we are very grateful to John Lacie and Doris Hadfield for coming to our rescue at short notice due to illness of another member. Ashton retained the trophy but we only lost by about 60 imps this time so we're getting better! A supper of potato pie or lasagne was provided and we would like to thank all the participants and organisers for an enjoyable evening.

50th Anniversary Dinner
50th Anniversary Dinner

The club celebrated its official 50th anniversary with a meal at the White Hart, Lydgate on Monday, 16th October 2017. There are rumours that the club started in 1965 but we only have official records of accounts going back to October 1967. We thank the organisers Rosemary, Andrea and Campbell, everyone who turned up for their support and we are grateful to Saddleworth Independent who published the following story about our evening.

Celebrations for club bridging half century gap

MEMBERS of Saddleworth Bridge Club left their packs of cards at home when they celebrated their 50th anniversary.

But they still reserved a good hand for guest speaker David Stevenson who joined the Uppermill group for its big 50 birthday at the White Hart, Lydgate.

David has forgotten more about bridge than most players know in his roles as professional player, tournament director and Grand Master.

His audience of 64 members and guests were suitably entertained during their special night.

As they were also by chairman, Stephen Angus, who told some amusing anecdotes about original members and the Club’s time at its first venue in Saddleworth School.

Members now meet every Monday at the Masonic Hall in Uppermill from 7.15pm. New bridge players are always welcome.

Saddleworth vs Ashton 3

Our third match against Ashton took place on Wednesday 14th Mar 2018 at their club. There were again only 4 teams of 4 from each club this time as we're finding it difficult to persuade enough members to play in a match. Again Ashton retained the trophy but we only lost by about 17 imps this time which is very encouraging! Maybe we'll get them next time. A supper of potato pie or lasagne was provided when we arrived instead of at half-time because it's hard to get everyone started again after the meal. Again we would like to thank all the participants and organisers for another enjoyable evening.
