Learning Bridge

At Royal Mid-Surrey we have occasional 'assisted/supervised' sessions run by Christine Tomkin to enable members to gently improve their bidding, play and defense.  Watch out for the dates included in our newsletters and on our website.

For more formal learning, we suggest having a look at Richmond Bridge Club (just over the Richmond Bridge at Cambridge Park).  This warm and friendly Club is the largest Club affiliated to the EBU and have learning sessions aimed at all levels of skills.  In addition to the 40 lessons complete experience for beginners they have short 4 lesson programmes aimed at specific areas.  Useful for refreshing ones knowledge.  Their website https://www.bridgewebs.com/richmond/ gives a comprehensive breakdown of the goings on at the Club.

Supervised Play with Christine Tomkin
Supervised Play with Christine Tomkin

Christine Tomkin is again answering our New Year wishes and organising a series of Supervised Play sessions beginning in January.  These sessions do not involve any prepared hands - just deal and ask for help, if you need, with the bidding, play and defence.  Scores are only kept so you know whether you are vulnerable or non-vulnerable - which often affects the bidding.  These sessions start at 10.30 and last about two hours.  There will be a small charge of £3 debited to your Club card.

Christine Tomkin is a registered EBU teacher and member of the Club.

Tuesday Afternoons - Benmore Bowl Duplicate Bridge
Tuesday Afternoons - Benmore Bowl Duplicate Bridge

Our Tuesday afternoon sessions are very popular.  This is a relaxed social afternoon with Tea and Biscuits if you wish to partake.   We hope you can encourage other less regular players to come along.  These afternoon sessions are playing for the Benmore Bowl trophy.  The sessions started on the 1st Tuesday in October and run through on most Tuesdays until the last Tuesday in March 2026.  To qualify for the trophy, a player must attend at least 8 of the Tuesday events.  After the end of March, bridge will continue to be organised until the last Tuesday in June provided that at least four tables are in play.  Please sign up on the website on the Bookings Page in the menu to the left for these very social occasions.

Julia Wright has been trialling two Wednesdays each month and is happy with the attendances and is more than happy to keep the two Wednesdays per month going.  These are held on the FIRST and THIRD Wednesday of each month (except in July, August and September when only the 1st Wednesday is in play), usually starting at 1.30pm in the Clubhouse.

These are gentle sessions of Chicago Bridge (playing with the same four on your table throughout).  Julia organises and runs the sessions (and in her absence Christine Wright).  The Booking Forms (in the Menu on the left) are for entries of upto 4 persons;  members and guests   The cost per player is £2.00.  If a player wishes to partake of the tea and biscuits, there will be a charge to their levy card.  Any questions on the bridge side should be addressed to Julia.  These organised sessions will only proceed if we have four complete tables signed up.  Any queries or amendments required to the Bookings, please e-mail Pip.
