Matters arising from the minutes of the
2016 AGM
Wednesday Morning timing: JP reported
that this had been discussed by the Committee in January 2017 and decided on a
start time of 9:30 and that the last movement should be started by 12:15.
Handicapping: JP reported that this had
been in place since January 2017 and was capably organized by Martin Newman.
Handicaps were based on the prizes won by each pair in the last 11 months and
were specific for each session.
Chairman’s Report
Jean Pearce reviewed her first year as
Chairman which had been dominated by the split with the Sports Club and there
was little else to report. She thanked each Committee member outlining their
roles and duties. She specifically mentioned and thanked Bryan Williams who is
moving and leaving the club for all his hard work as webmaster and principal
scorer. Sandy Cameron has agreed to take over his role.
Jean thanked other non-committee members
with substantial roles: Mary Hyde for organisation of the stewards and
directors, Martin Hooff for running the non-fear sessions on Wednesday
afternoon, Chris Simmons for organizing social bridge sessions and agreeing to
take over Bryan’s scoring duties, Graeme Monk for volunteering to deal with the
prizes, Dick and Brenda Goodwin for the Eastbourne weekend and Colin Deverill
for the summer golf day. Finally the directors and scorers, for all their
support and hard work.
Jean congratulated all Prize Winners,

Treasurer’s Report
Copies of the account ending 31st
August 2017 were available at the meeting.
Brenda Blackwell explained that the
income was £23,408 (£22,461 from table money, £197 from teaching sessions, £736
from Charity sessions and £13 from the Golf Day and £0.67 interest).
Expenditure was £4,563 (£2,617 on prizes, £1,044 on equipment, £881 on special
events and £21 on secretarial expenses).Charity donations were £749 – this is
the first year that these have been separately identified in the accounts.
Over the year we gave Purley Sports Club
£18095.
Our balances stood at £340 current a/c
and £2841 deposit a/c.
As the Bridge Club is now a separate
entity, the accounts should be checked at the end of the year by someone
independent of the Committee, preferably with an accounting background. The
Committee has asked Chris Simmons to do this: - this arrangement was agreed
unanimously by the meeting (Proposer: Richard Applebee, Seconder:Dick Goodwin)
Election of Committee
Brenda Blackwell was elected Treasurer,
Rosemary Fulcher was elected Secretary. Chris Simmons retired from the
committee. Seven committee members were re-elected: Sandy Cameron, Butch
Manning, Martin Newman, Jean Pearce, Clare Shelley, Elaine Cann and Wendy
Wyatt.
Any Other Business
Christmas
closing: there will be no bridge sessions
on 25th December or 1st January. No Wednesday afternoon
session on 27th December 2017.
E-mails from PSC: the
number of non-bridge specific emails send out by Purley Sports was raised as a
problem. JP agreed to put this on the Committee agenda in January 2017
Communication with Purley Sports Club:
the existence of formal communication channels with PSC was raised. Butch
Manning is still on the PSC Management Committee as a floating member and keeps
an eye on our interests.
Close of meeting. The Chairman thanked members for their
participation and closed the meeting at 7.16pm.
